Unless you caught it incredibly early and are willing to lockdown and violate rights of millions of people repeatedly at the first catch of infection (like Melbourne) it’s impossible to contain the virus, it’s too contagious

You do realize Denmark is just about the only country with a lower death rate than Sweden, right? They did it right, but once the cat’s out of the bag, lockdown just prolongs the inevitable as literally every country on earth has learned and why nobody besides NZ/Aus, believes in lockdowns anymore, just managed social distancing

I think it's clear by now that the total lockdowns did a lot of unnecessary damage. Many areas have reduced spikes just by being more diligent about social distancing. But hindsight is always 2020. In March we didn't know very much about the virus at all.

2.) Didn’t destroy people’s livelihoods by imposing draconian authoritarian lockdowns that we now know do nothing
3.) Protected the most vulnerable and hit herd

That’s how you beat COVID. Lockdowns unless you catch it immediately like NZ and can isolate yourself from the world, just push your inevitable spike out a few more weeks, no matter what you do

For us to have had success against COVID we would’ve had to have a stringent lockdown in January (when all the mysterious pneumonia cases started appearing) with military to enforce it which would have gone poorly here. We’d have to test every single person coming in overseas with rapid test COVID tests and we don’t have the infrastructure for that.
