Don't know if the possible gendering problem is what you mean, but I've found it pretty easy to swap in "folks" for "guys," at least in writing

Speaking it aloud still feels a little hokey to me but I'm getting the hang of it

Personally, I prefer to use "vermin" when referring to lifeforms other than myself.

Yeah it’s just that words like folks and y’all don’t feel natural to me in writing or spoken aloud. Then again maybe that’s just because I never use them. Bit of a chicken or the egg situation we’ve got here

I mean the word guys wasn’t even needed in that sentence, nor was any replacement for it. It’s just such a deeply ingrained habit I often do it without even realizing it

But I think Took is right. A more universally hostile tone would be far more appropriate
