so i started playing guitar again

yeah so i was too fat to play guitar for a long time but now i can play again

i have a really nice old martin guitar but years of abuse in bad humidity when i was using drugs has made it have terrible intonation.

i decided i might fix it up later, but got a new cheapy guitar that's coming tomorrow.

i went to sam ash and tried out like 20 guitars under $400 and this was the best, the Yamaha FG830:

https://www.sweetwater.com/store/det...nought-natural

pretty much $300 everywhere, I got it from here because they supposedly check intonation and stuff before they ship. guy called me after i ordered, too, which was nice of them. was surprised to find a rosewood fretboard on any cheap guitar. my favorite

gonna get it tomorrow :) excited!

just thought i'd share. can't wait to play glynis and it not sound like absolute shit

I'm currently setting up my Jazzmaster again, basically taking it apart and putting it back together again. This chart has been helpful.

reprise85 11-11-2019 05:08 AM

good advice

Ram27 11-11-2019 08:58 AM

fuck yeah that's awesome reprise!

playing an instrument always does wonders for my mental health/soul/etc

______

here's my setup [which is really 2 elaborate considering i mostly know just SP riffs and some indie rock stuff]

i just got the taylor a few weeks ago and it's absolutely divine

reprise85 11-11-2019 09:36 AM

nice setup

i played some taylor guitars when i was trying cheap ones. they were mostly $1500+. they were nice but not as nice as i figured for that much imo

Run To Me 11-11-2019 11:03 AM

Mmmm rosewood fretboards my fave as well! Have fun reprise, glad you’re gettin back into the strum of guitarjoys

I've never thought about it much myself, but agreed. Maple has too much friction imo.

Disco King 11-11-2019 06:18 PM

Good to hear you're playing again, Reprise!

reprise85 11-12-2019 12:11 AM

got the guitar and played for a few hours :) feels nice. super easy to play and sounds great. obviously not the best sounding guitar in the world but after playing a guitar with terrible intonation for a while it sounds like heaven

Shallowed 11-12-2019 12:24 AM

You're just making excuses for your shitty guitar playing.

reprise85 11-12-2019 09:55 AM

that fuck you being an asshole for?

never claimed i was the best guitar player, but i'm pretty decent

FoolofaTook 11-12-2019 10:02 AM

is playing this like 3 times shittier than a normal ibanez?

I'm a weirdo in this regard. I know rosewood is a softer wood but I feel like my fingers stick into a maple neck and really allow me to get full mobility and traction

redbreegull 11-12-2019 03:02 PM

Glad to hear you are playing again Reprise. I think we talked about it awhile back so it's awesome to see things reach fruition. you should post some stuff after you've gotten back into it

Mals Marola 11-12-2019 03:09 PM

i normally choose maple, but depending on the guitar rosewood can be quite nice indeed

fuck ebony tho

FoolofaTook 11-12-2019 03:29 PM

why are you racist?

Mals Marola 11-12-2019 03:45 PM

Ibanez made me do it!

You're never too fat to play guitar reprise. Thom Yorke wrote a song called Anyone Can Play Guitar and that included fat-asses.

So this is a message for any of you self-doubting overtly obese corn-dog munching beached whales out there: follow your dreams, never give up, keep going and who knows where it may lead; maybe one day you too could play guitar for a shitty pop-punk band like Bowling For Soup.

i was too fat to play acoustic guitar without a strap. i mean, i could barely i guess, but i could not see at all what my hands were doing. which is more important if you haven't played in awhile

but thanks and also fuck you

i tried one ibanez acoustic. worst one i tried, even worse than the $100 epiphone and no-names they had

thanks

after two days with it i am very happy with how it sounds and the quality for the price. it's really easy to play compared to my old guitar, way lower action, which is nice for starting again of course. i was playing a bit for the past month or two, so it wasn't like i just picked it up out of nowhere just the past few days, but i feel like i'm reasonably decent considering how long it's been. i'm not frustrated with not being able to play anything, i mean there's some stuff i can't play right but i just need some practice. i don't suck, i guess is what i'm saying.

i've been playing a lot of my old stuff and whatever SP stuff is forever encoded into my brain matter. and a few misc things. really fun. and i got calluses on my fingers again :)

wHATcOLOR 11-13-2019 01:39 AM

cool! happy for you. i sometimes wonder if i'll ever pick it up again. i surely would have, had it not been for living mostly in apartments forever

but also like... it's easy to get stuck in a rut, playing the same old things and i'm not sure i feel like exerting the focus to grow my skills there. like that effort for me would be better spent trying to learn mandarin or something

but regardless,

reprise85 11-13-2019 10:51 AM

i live in an apartment but i don't play early or late. is that acceptable? i just figured it was. also since it's acoustic

Eulogy 11-13-2019 11:18 AM

I mess around with my acoustic every once in a while but just very recently replaced my v cheap electric that got lost years ago. At a pawn shop that also had a little $50 Marshall practice amp that is perfect for my purposes. Haven’t really had the chance to do much with it but I am looking forward to it. I’ll never be a good guitarist but that’s not really the point. Just gonna play hummer on repeat or something.

I also played a music man stingray bass for a bit a couple weeks back lol. Real nice.

I don't get much out of playing guitar. It's not very exciting really.
