So this is a message for any of you self-doubting overtly obese corn-dog munching beached whales out there: follow your dreams, never give up, keep going and who knows where it may lead; maybe one day you too could play guitar for a shitty pop-punk band like Bowling For Soup.

i was too fat to play acoustic guitar without a strap. i mean, i could barely i guess, but i could not see at all what my hands were doing. which is more important if you haven't played in awhile

but thanks and also fuck you

i tried one ibanez acoustic. worst one i tried, even worse than the $100 epiphone and no-names they had

thanks

after two days with it i am very happy with how it sounds and the quality for the price. it's really easy to play compared to my old guitar, way lower action, which is nice for starting again of course. i was playing a bit for the past month or two, so it wasn't like i just picked it up out of nowhere just the past few days, but i feel like i'm reasonably decent considering how long it's been. i'm not frustrated with not being able to play anything, i mean there's some stuff i can't play right but i just need some practice. i don't suck, i guess is what i'm saying.

i've been playing a lot of my old stuff and whatever SP stuff is forever encoded into my brain matter. and a few misc things. really fun. and i got calluses on my fingers again :)

wHATcOLOR 11-13-2019 01:39 AM

cool! happy for you. i sometimes wonder if i'll ever pick it up again. i surely would have, had it not been for living mostly in apartments forever

but also like... it's easy to get stuck in a rut, playing the same old things and i'm not sure i feel like exerting the focus to grow my skills there. like that effort for me would be better spent trying to learn mandarin or something

but regardless,

reprise85 11-13-2019 10:51 AM

i live in an apartment but i don't play early or late. is that acceptable? i just figured it was. also since it's acoustic

Eulogy 11-13-2019 11:18 AM

I mess around with my acoustic every once in a while but just very recently replaced my v cheap electric that got lost years ago. At a pawn shop that also had a little $50 Marshall practice amp that is perfect for my purposes. Haven’t really had the chance to do much with it but I am looking forward to it. I’ll never be a good guitarist but that’s not really the point. Just gonna play hummer on repeat or something.

I also played a music man stingray bass for a bit a couple weeks back lol. Real nice.

I don't get much out of playing guitar. It's not very exciting really.

Candy Cane 11-13-2019 02:06 PM

I could see it being exciting if you're really good or you can create great songs I guess.

It's the same with painting, if you're really good then you feel like you're contributing but if you're just messing around...

Disco King 11-13-2019 03:04 PM

Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

Many would question what you get out of posting here, then

Alternate response: I think we can all agree that doing things for pleasure is a drag

totally fine imo.

[also my crazy radical point of view is that any music, no matter the volume, at any time, is okay as long as you're playing an instrument / creating it]

Ram used to practice in a unit that he rented specifically for the purposes of playing drums at any hour of the day. The noise he made was isolated enough, both structurally and geographically, that it couldn't have possibly bothered anyone.

Except for that time when he had a window open because of the heat, and someone who was walking their dog in the area at 3am called the police. When the police arrived, they incidentally found evidence that Ram (a minor in your country at the time) had been drinking beer. They arrested him and confiscated his drums and beer.

oh no poor baby. i guess he can play whatever he wants, as loud as he wants, whenever he wants regardless of his surroundings. i never realized his rough past.

what constitutes an instrument because I can think of some music you'd want shut off immediately

Elphenor 11-13-2019 09:57 PM

my radical view is everyone should be allowed to play 4'33 at any volume at any time during the day

Shallowed 11-13-2019 10:54 PM

Fuck. YES.

You would love this experimental music/art scene that I spend a lot of time in. The other week, a couple of guys did an audience-participatory performance of Alvin Lucier's "I Am Sitting in a Room". It was an amazing experience.

There may be a recording of it somewhere.
