You put Bernie next to Trump and it'll be like Coca-Cola vs Shasta

Biden is an elder statesman type figure, a proxy of Obama, and seems like your average JOE in a lot of ways. The Americans you meet on the internet are more likely to be progressive, but this is not a progressive country and a huge portion of the Democratic electorate still considers themselves moderate and are not keen on the kind of sweeping changes Bernie and Elizabeth are proposing. To them, Biden looks like a safe and familiar candidate from the old guard who will bring out people on the fence about whether the Democrats are really any better than Trump because scary things like socialism and spending.

Biden is also popular with older members of minority communities, especially black Americans. Boomers in the black community are fairly staunch supporters of the Democratic establishment. They came out for Hillary in 2016, and although history has painted things differently re: tough on crime laws and such, Bill Clinton was and still is to some extent seen as a big ally of black America. And they are still more likely to come out and vote than younger black people.

I'm not voting for Biden in the primary, but the left needs to understand that a lot of people do feel the above ways and they need to be appealed to somehow if Trump is going to be defeated.

It’s almost heartening to consider that the establishment in the U.S. has done enough for enough people that they want it to continue, and need to be appealed to.

the media has been calling biden the front-runner since he first entered the race, and lazy voters eat that shit up. bill and hillary have never actually been allies to "black America" contrary to the narrative shoved down our throats. all you have to do is look at their backed policies, kept company, and down-home racism to know their interests are self-serving first and foremost.

I mean yeah I guess, but I think we all know liberalism hasn't been good to minorities in the US in general. But I suppose if you grew up during the Civil Rights era and you saw Johnson pass the Civil Rights Act and stuff, that kind of sweeping change shapes your lifelong outlook on who the good guys are? Not sure.

everyone knows this, but thanks for shouting into the echo chamber to signal your noble virtues to us

a more important point is that leftists are not doing well convincing people outside the intellectual class that this narrative is true, otherwise older black voters wouldn't keep supporting the establishment

have fun voting for biden (but not in the primary lol )

Eulogy 12-01-2019 11:21 PM

I do think it’s a bit odd that non black voters are telling black voters who black voters should be supporting.

That doesn’t mean I like biden though.

Shallowed 12-01-2019 11:34 PM

What do you mean by "tell"?

yo soy el mejor 12-02-2019 09:42 AM

Well, it's over, they announced the articles of impeachment and it's just all completed now

Several of my racist relatives are posting long missives on Facebook about how they've been blind all this time and the scales dropped from their eyes this morning and they're throwing their support behind Sanders

If you turn on Fox News the hosts are all just crying and apologizing while the crew dismantles the sets

Christmas is saved, boys, it's over

It's over, the President just gave an address stating he was very sorry and that he's going to report straight to NIMH where they can do all kinds of tests on him forever and ever

The troops have all converted to Roman Catholicism and will be home for Christmas with a 14-pound ham for each of them

Good work, everyone, it's over

You’re right. Nothing changes. But at least some ppl stuck up for the truth. Even if it was motivated primarily by constituent/political pressure and everything. Sometimes i would like to think there’s still the possibility for a pure act of justice from our “leaders.” It’s dumb, i know. But i just can’t let my heart turn totally to the cold ash of cynicism

Disco King 12-10-2019 03:44 PM

I haven't been following the impeachment stuff all that closely, but I'd think the point of following through with it isn't some ludicrous belief that a Republican Senate would actually convict Trump, but rather (1) upholding rule of law by at least going through the formal process of holding a president who acts unconstitutionally or in a way not fitting of his office to account, even if it will ultimately go nowhere, and (2) the fact that the impeachment happening at all, even if it won't lead to a conviction, is politically damaging for a president so close to re-election and will hurt him in the polls.

Like, yeah, Trump has a base whose support for him will not be swayed by anything, not even him "stand[ing] in the middle of fifth avenue and shoot[ing] somebody," but this probably isn't about trying to reach them. Plenty of the people who voted for him aren't part of this irrational, unwaivering base, and are swing voters who were legitimately duped and misled about the nature of the candidate they were voting for. As of the Ukraine scandal, more Americans now support impeaching the president than don't support it. A proper strategy of sustaining their distaste for the conduct of the current president, and actually mobilizing them to vote to counter Trump's base, would remove Trump from office in 2020.

I'm just worried about the "actually mobilizing them to vote" thing. If they are dissatisfied with both candidates, they won't be bothered and will stay home. But Trump supporters, those guys are going to be at the polls no matter what.

Who would actually want those things in their house? Aside from fuzzy, of course, who wouldn't be aware of the irony.

redbreegull 12-13-2019 05:41 PM

after watching all this, I pretty much think it's a genuine possibility at this point that Trump refuses to leave office when his term is up and the GOP backs him

hnibos 12-15-2019 05:08 PM

There will undoubtedly be a discussion to eliminate the two term policy and a bunch of dumb fucking Americans will say its undemocratic to limit the terms and then even more dumb fucking Americans will call the two term limit unconstitutional.

They're capable of voting against their own interest, just like any other demographic. Poor white people in the south do this, but I never hear anyone saying you shouldn't tell poor white people they're voting against their own interests unless you're a poor white person.

Disco King 12-17-2019 04:03 AM

Even Fox polls show that most Americans want Trump impeached. Damn.
