Sonic Johnny 12-04-2018 12:07 AM

These collab things are always fun to watch but I really do not get why adults still fizz on this movie fifteen years later

redbreegull 12-04-2018 05:32 PM

I found this to be fucking hilarious and plan to finish watching it tonight

I think that's the joke. Nobody actually thinks it's an amazing movie. It's just funny to give so much attention to an arbitrary 2000s juvenile comedy film as if it's a cinematic milestone.

It's related to the "All Star" meme.

redbreegull 12-07-2018 09:25 PM

woah woah, easy there. I'm not saying it's high art, but people do really like Shrek. It's an extremely witty, multidimensional kids movie with beautiful animation that also manages to be poignant and sincere.

redbreegull 12-07-2018 09:25 PM

the sequels are all awful contrived cash-grabs tho

FoolofaTook 12-07-2018 09:26 PM

i liked the first shrek

but that was a long, long time ago

redbreegull 12-07-2018 09:41 PM

I don't know about all this

In fact

Alice 12-07-2018 10:54 PM

I politely disagree

redbreegull 12-07-2018 10:56 PM

really?

Alice 12-07-2018 10:59 PM

That image does nothing for me and I would not call it beautiful. We have different taste here and that's ok. I may also be biased

Alice 12-07-2018 11:00 PM

I have feelings about cartoons ok

Alice 12-07-2018 11:01 PM

Am I being a dick by saying I don't like it? Or is this discourse? Should I just be quiet?

redbreegull 12-07-2018 11:08 PM

no, you are fine we are allowed to disagree. I checked it with the kindness regime

redbreegull 12-07-2018 11:08 PM

I am curious why you don't like it though

FoolofaTook 12-07-2018 11:34 PM

sry breeg but compare that to this:

redbreegull 12-07-2018 11:38 PM

completely different though

FoolofaTook 12-07-2018 11:50 PM

heh i was just looking for an excuse to post that

This is a question that I could spend a lot of time answering. But I think it's mainly that the art feels joyless and artificial to me. I think you lose a lot of the fun of animation by trying to make things look "realistic". Like I said I'm probably biased and I guess I get why people like movies like this but part of the joy of cartoons for me is that they are fun to look at. And really good ones are fun to look at like every frame of. I just looked at a bunch of Shrek stills and they did not feel fun to me at all

Alice 12-07-2018 11:58 PM

But that's just like, my opinion

redbreegull 12-08-2018 12:01 AM

I always thought pixar and dreamworks easily had the best computer animation in their films. If you watch some of the non-Pixar Disney digitally animated movies, they are clearly not done as well IMO. or like the fucking ice age franchise or whatever.

Alice 12-08-2018 12:07 AM

Yeah I like Pixar best I guess but I don't watch a lot of computer animation because what I really like best is grandpas cartoons and that is why my opinion is maybe irrelevant

I wouldn't even consider digital animation to be cartoons.

What appeals to me about the Shrek style is that it's deep, lush, vibrant, and really detailed. The textures are really varied and "tangible," and the color and contrast are striking. Before Shrek, there had been I am pretty sure less than ten fully computer animated films ever. I think the scenery is fairly immersive and impressive compared to Bugs Life and Toy Story, and this was the first movie I can remember where animated human faces were convincing (sorry Syd from Toy Story)
