Cool old people are the coolest people. They've got experience and have managed to not become an asshole while attaining it. Working in EMS/ER/ICU, I miss taking care of old WWII vets. The vast majority of those dudes were cool and interesting as shit. They weren't whiners and faced failing health with dignity. If they complained about something, it usually meant something was up.

That said, if you're a nasty old codger (not due to obvious dementia or other issues) you deserve no additional respect just for making it 80 years as a asshole. The first wave of baby boomers just now making it to advanced age are a much shittier lot. They tend to feel much more entitled, are whinier, and more prone to being vocal with racist, sexist, and bigoted comments without shame. Trump certainly has emboldened some baser instincts in lots of them, at least here in the south.

We get tons of self-identified elderly rolling through the ER who think the world has to stop for them. "What do you mean I have to go out to the lobby and wait for a room. I'm 62 years old and I've had a heart attack before and I took an ambulance here!" You get an EKG, bloodwork, and then back out to the lobby like everyone else. If shit turns up fucked, you'll know as we'll come yank you into a room ahead of the rest of the poor bastards sitting around waiting for a bed.

"self-identified elderly"

i love it

ilikeplanets 12-27-2018 11:43 AM

but honestly, working in a hospital-type setting must be an actual nightmare, and would definitely make me hate humanity in general. i feel that way even as a patient in one. kudos!

Ol' Couch Ass 12-28-2018 06:30 AM

Sometimes it's a pain in the ass, sometimes it's a mitzvah. After a while, it's mostly the same frustrations as any public facing job in that people, old and young, are usually morons.

vixnix 12-28-2018 09:00 AM

I respect my parents, and one of them is over 70, does that count?

D. 12-28-2018 06:24 PM

I give the same amount of basic respect and decency to them as I do any other member of the public.

D. 12-28-2018 06:25 PM

I hope and I can only assume I will be an old person who still has that youthful twinkle in his eye.

And red pants.

Two things about old people I can't stand, and pray to the sweet lord above that I never do:

1) Old people who still think everyone else is wrong, and not them. Like, it never occurred to them in 70+ years that maybe it's them who's the fuckin' idiot.

2) Old people who go back to thinking they're in their heyday as if they never experienced the past 50+ years. They start dancing the charlston and wearing their hair like it's 1956. No, you don't get to live in a fantasy -you were here during the Clinton administration. Learn how to email like an adult.

These two things make me physically angry.

Help the aged,
One time they were just like you
Drinking, smoking cigs and sniffing glue
Help the aged
Don't just put them in a home
Can't have much fun when they're all on their own
Give a hand, if you can
Try and help them to unwind
Give them hope and give them comfort
'Cause they're running out of time
In the meantime we try
Try to forget that nothing lasts forever
No big deal, so give us all a feel
Funny how it all falls away
When did you first realize?
It's time you took an older lover, baby
Teach you stuff, although he's looking rough
Funny how it all falls away
Help the aged
'Cause one day you'll be older too
You might need someone who can pull you through
And if you look very hard
Behind those lines upon their face
You may see where you are headed
And it's such a lonely place, oh
In the meantime we try
Try to forget that nothing lasts forever
No big deal so give us all a feel
Funny how it all falls away
When did you first realize?
It's time you took an older lover baby
Teach you stuff although he's looking rough
Funny how it all falls away
You can dye your hair but it's the one thing you can't change
Can't run away from yourself, yourself, yours-s-s-s-self
In the meantime we try
Try to forget that nothing lasts forever
No big deal, so give us all a feel
Funny how it all falls away.
When did you first realize?
It's time you took an older lover, baby
Teach you stuff, although he's looking rough
Funny how it all falls away
Oh, it's funny how it all falls away
Funny how it all falls away
Oh, it's funny how it all, how it all falls away
So help the aged

Question: What is with elderly people who die their hair?

They never seem to do it consistently, so it's not like they are fooling anybody about going grey. And what's wrong with going grey, anyway? It seems pretty normal and expected of older people, and it looks dignified. Has anybody ever said, "wow, that old person would be pretty hot if they didn't have grey hair?"

dye

i think a lot of people have the instinct to get rid of shit that is object proof of them getting older, for one. for others, they just are used to themselves having a certain color of hair and they want to keep it. my grandma used to dye her hair until she got cancer, and she looked much younger with colored hair.

FoolofaTook 12-31-2018 03:11 PM

like i said: fear of senescence.
