Professor Hobbit (or anyone else who speaks this godforsaken language), please help!
Why on earth is there an apostrophe? It's Ds, the litter D, six times, no? By this logic, "Peter was a great student, he only ever got As", would be wrong and it would need to say "A's", but that cannot be true, I am losing my damn mind. why why why ![]() |
I always learned that it is incorrect to use an apostrophe when pluralizing letters or numbers unless the letter is lowercase, in which case you use an apostrophe to avoid confusion. It's a common mistake though
|
Yeah, according to CMoS 7.15, Tyler is exactly right. Uppercase, no apostrophe; lowercase, apostrophe.
However, in my Copyeditor's Handbook, both upper and lowercase plurals have apostrophes. And in one of my first assignments for this class, the answer key had letter grades with apostrophes. Some of us asked my instructor about this very question, and she said that it was a question of style, and that it depends on the publisher's preference. |
jesus christ, how is that a matter of style.
1990s vs 1990's isn't a matter of style, either, one is simply incorrect. Next time I write "2 apple's and 1 banana", I'll call that a matter of style, too! (Thanks, though, in conclusion: that 's style can go fuck itself!) |
As can be a word. So are Is and Us (when they are at the beginning of a sentence). I'm guessing this is one reason why apostrophe might be used with plural letters.

I just got a 143 out of 150 on my copyediting midterm!
:bananamac |
Congratulations...I feel a little threatened by your success because I just submitted my Uni app a couple of days ago and I’m pretty sure I won’t do that well. Will you celebrate?
Are you going to edit for a living? I am not swayed by the “As and Is are words” defence. The context will be enough to distinguish one from the other. Apostrophe misuse should be a punishable offence I reckon. People should have to watch Piers Morgan interviews for 12 hours per offence. |
Thanks but it is just an online course. And tbh, I scored pretty low on the actual editing portion of the test (26.5 out of 30). I did well but then missed two flagrant mistakes (a period just hanging out in the middle of a sentence and a misspelled word).
I am going to try to edit for a living. I think, given my criminal record, that freelance work might be the solution. But it is very daunting since you have to find clients on your own and deal with a bunch of stuff I know nothing about like contracts, setting rates, etc. Yeah, I also think there shouldn't be any apostrophes with capital letters. But some style guides definitely insist on it, and copyediting is all about doing what the publisher wants you to do. |
ok, i need to get something off my chest that's been bothering me for very long.
i was gonna say something about it when this thread was first posted, but relented. but i don't think i can hold it in anymore. the actual quote, is "ENGLISH motherfucker, do you speak it?!" the "even" is redundant. god that felt good |
i mean it's kinda like quoting die hard as "yipee-kai-doh motherfucker"
don't u agree (the use of inappropriate language in both examples is merely coincidental) |
![]() I saw this yesterday and thought of you, too'k look at this absolute disregard for apostrophes and well, values in general i had a meeting with someone who wanted to offer me a job; needless to say, I never wanted to be in that place a'gain |
I love Liquor's and Gin's

Corrected grammar may be one of their special offers inside, to be fair.
What a needlessly judgmental bunch we are. |
No worse than the printed tee we spotted which said "But first... Girl's", as a nonsensical play on the "but first, coffee" line, which is already lame enough as it is.

heh.
the other day one of my prospective bosses, a "managing editor" who is training me, sent me an email that in-cluded a dangling modifier IN THE FIRST CLAUSE OF THE FIRST SENTENCE. |
