Meh, he did more harm than good

as someone who went though torture myself (although not to the degree he did obviously) i feel some solidarity with him... but 81 is a good long life and he made changes in the world (some i agree with, most i don't) so i'm not sad for him.

He may have been painted as THE OL MAVS by the press but the guy was a strict party-line republican and the few times he bucked the far-right publicly are overshadowed by the fact that he voted for almost everything Trump wanted to do or nominate. Confusing him for someone with enough backbone to stand up against his party like Arlen Specter is a disservice.

Dreadful politician.

His military service more than classifies him as a hero. I can't imagine being strong enough to endure what he did for as long as he did.
