So, I was watching Fellowship of the Ring the other day

Hadn't seen it since it came out. Never read the books, didn't remember a damn thing about it. GF and I were locked in during a blizzard.

Ian McKellen says "you FoolofaTook!" and I burst out giggling. Couldn't explain/didn't want to explain why. Thankfully, she didn't ask.

That's my time, thank you.

Movie was pretty good considering how awful it coulda turned out

Too sunny and bright is my main complaint, as an eager rereader of the books since childhood. Tolkien was constantly talking grey, misty, fogs, etc. Movie didn’t capture that pervasive atmosphere of mystery/gloom/ancientness

It struck me watching the thing that the guy who directed Bad Taste and Dead Alive really had come a long way in a short amount of time. It's amazing in retrospect that he was handed the keys to a franchise/budget of that magnitude.

FOTR is the best of the 3. I love how natural and real the world seems. Where CGI is used it is generally subtle and accentuates the environment... by the time ROTK came out, Jackson was drunk on his budget and the world seems far more fake. Since the sacredness of the natural world is a huge motif in Tolkien's work, it creates a big disconnect to see entire landscapes generated by 2003 cgi. oh well.

The Shire is probably supposed to be a bit greyer than the movies depicted cause it's England, but I was overall very satisfied with the FOTR environments. Only thing I will say is Lothlorien actually seemed too cold and sterile. It's supposed to be filled with otherworldly light and beauty, something out of a long-past golden age.

did you watch macbeth? it helps to read it first. make sure it's an oxford critical edition. it's impossible without footnotes.

The Hobbit movies may have ruined The Lord of the Rings to me.

Haven't been able to revisit them since.

Peter Jackson deserves to have his facial flora set afire. By me.

LOTR (the book) is bloated and dumb. The Hobbit (the book) is excellent.

I HAVE SPOKEN

LaBelle 03-22-2018 09:28 AM

Aragwen shipping days were the days.

Have you guys heard about Amazon's upcoming LOTR show? What we know:

-it will cover "at least fives series"

-production has to start within the next two years or the rights revert back to Tolkien estate forever

-the budget is "ONE BILLION DOLLARS"

-the rights are to material from LOTR and The Hobbit books, as well as the animated movies from the 70s and the 6 Jackson movies... so basically this is the same set of rights which have been kicked around since Tolkien sold them before his death out of financial need. So material from the Silmarillion or any other peripheral work is still unworkable

FoolofaTook 04-07-2018 03:04 PM

good. they should leave the Silmarillion alone.

redbreegull 04-07-2018 03:06 PM

the budget is one silmarillion dollars
