Petition to Recognize "Do They Know It's Christmas?" as the Worst Christmas Song

It's just a smug and ugly song. Dumb lyrics. Makes you wanna hurl by the time you get to that "feed the world" coda.

ilikeplanets 12-24-2017 06:39 PM

i am lucky enough to never have encountered this beast it seems

i really hate the melody of Joy to the World though. And fucking Jingle Bell Rock

life's_a_drag 12-24-2017 07:10 PM

Haven't heard it either, but Christmas music in general isint much of my thing. To me it sounds like melodic yawning, but I'm probably just bitter because it's been non-stop for a good four weeks.

Ehhh, as far as Chritmas songs go, I don't really mind this one. It's gotta nice inspirational vibe going on.

buzzard 12-25-2017 05:58 PM

We can always rely on you for the worst take on a situation.

fuzzyroes 12-25-2017 09:27 PM

Jeeze, look at this guys... I have my own little lap dog yipping at my heels... He just won't stop!

teh b0lly!!1 12-25-2017 09:32 PM

having this obligatory christmas music playing everywhere honestly gets very fucking grating very fast

i don't know if it's because of how the Chinese do it, particularly, or if it's just generally maddening thing, but i'm not a fan

btw i have almost completed my transformation into a bitter old man who hates all holidays, children, unicorns and food that isn't broccoli or pizza

fuzzyroes 12-25-2017 09:35 PM

The grocery store I work at has been playing it all month... It's just brutal, man. It's such a small playlist so you hear the same songs repeated like 2 or 3 times a shift and then there's other versions of the same songs on top of that.

I was joking the other day to someone that it's basically like Chinese water-torture

fuzzyroes 12-25-2017 09:36 PM

It's cool getting to hear Beach Boys at my work all the time though.

how pervasive is Xmas music in Israel, I wonder?

teh b0lly!!1 12-25-2017 10:26 PM

it's nonexistent.
there aren't many christians in israel, so it isn't a properly celebrated holiday. there's probably a considerable percentage of hipsters who celebrate it to fake their way into feeling more important and International, but it's a sham.

it's amusing having experienced my first real christmases in china, though. china has a way of dealing with foreign culture in a way that aims to 'please' the suitable audiences. like, they go through the motions, so to speak, but you can tell they have no idea what they're doing at all. that's why you can go shopping or sit in a coffeeshop and hear a 15-second loop of Jingle Bells repeating ad infinitum, or see some poor chinese worker in a ridiculous christmas costume even though they don't speak a word of English and look like the last thing they give a shit about in this world is some ammurican holiday. i don't claim to know what it's like in the US, but here it's pure+unfiltered consumerist bullshit. just a particularly effective way of cashing in that comes once a year, basically

They must have forgotten to strip Rolf of his YouTube uploads while they were at it.

in the US it is beyond pervasive, and it affects everyone differently. some just get into the gift-giving and meals, some use it as an excuse to do nothing, some argue against its very existence as part of the culture, and some proselytize. and a lot of people wear ugly sweaters and/or pajamas. the lights are pretty though. basically it's inescapable but i've learned to see the humor in it being a non-christian and never having celebrated except upon invitation. black friday still scares the shit out of me though. glad it's over. new year's eve is my favorite holiday. although this will be my first tame one so it's bittersweet. but mostly sweet.

LaBelle 12-26-2017 04:14 AM

What about the best?

LaBelle 12-26-2017 04:37 AM

It's an opera based on The Little Match Girl i'm sure everyone will want to know.
The most uplifting christmas story ever.

vixnix 12-26-2017 04:56 AM

That is fantastic, how have I never seen that before

uplifting indeed

fuzzyroes 12-26-2017 05:02 PM

Am I the only one here who generally likes Christmas? I mean, sure, I've had my phases where I'd rebel against it... But honestly, it's an excuse to get together with loved ones and family, relax and have a nice time. It's certainly not something that I get particularly excited about, but I enjoy it probably more than any other holiday. I think the traditions are charming in much the way I enjoy the traditions of Halloween... Sure, it can become overkill if you stress about it, but then whose fault is that?

ilikeplanets 12-26-2017 06:07 PM

it wouldn't be so bad if the merchandise didn't start appearing in fucking September and if it was just more low-key in general, like halloween. you can ignore halloween if you so choose. christmas is inescapable in the US. the traditions itself are fine, i just can't stand mass hysteria. and, again, black friday fucking terrifies me.

buzzard 12-26-2017 06:19 PM

There are several blood relatives I probably couldn't legitimately claim to know at all were it not for that one day of the year upon which we're expected to gather and exchange pleasantries.

buzzard 12-26-2017 06:20 PM

The crip relatives, on the other hand...

lolololololololol
