The gf recently said that our country was the only one where people just stand wherever, leaving no place for people to walk past them. Is this true? I know in England you stand on one side and walk on the other and it's a big nono if you don't and i wouldn't be surprised if this was the same in the US and Canada. And lol, India.

walk left, stand right. always. but lots of assholes don't do that and get upset when you squeeze past them. should've stood right!

they even have signs here, but apparently some people still can't get it. like, if you don't mind waiting in a queue, then stand to the right! don't make a whole new one where people don't want to wait.

It's one of those things that once you realize what you're suppose to do you feel so bad for being a dumbass and never doing it before, but how could you know if no one (or no sign) ever told you

why do people stand on escalators at all? WHY? drives me nuts. the point of them is to get people through a choke point faster, not slower.

Walk left, stand right. Anyone who stands on the left side is known as an escaleftor. There are no signs here but the majority of people seem to know the proper decorum, at least in the metro system. At the mall you probably will encounter dumbasses who block your path of travel more often.

Where I live no one walks past others on an escalator, it's viewed as kinda rude even if there's room to walk.

They have escalators in the southern hemisphere??? Do they run the wrong way?

when i went to Japan they had the most elaborate systems there that everybody seemed to know instinctively. on escalators, stairs, walking lanes, at the metro - everybody is organized as fuck and walk only where they're supposed to, and i often found myself being THE RUDE GAIJIN being somewhere i'm not supposed to be. especially coming from China where it's fucking chaos everywhere and enormous amounts of people go in all possible directions at the same time.

the rule here is also stand right-walk left, but for a while now i've been moving my ass more and when i face a busy escalator or free-ish normal stairs, i'm gonna blaze up the stairs 9 out of 10 times.

it drives me crazy seeing how lazy people are - very often i'll see people actually opting to take the handicapped elevator just to avoid going DOWN 10-15 stairs. or people literally squeezing into an escalator just to not take a bunch of steps. what the hell is wrong wichoo?
