Male Feminists

MyOneAndOnly 03-05-2017 11:02 AM

the biggest players I know are male feminists and lesbians

LaBelle 03-05-2017 11:05 AM

Video is region restricted. I feel discriminated.

MyOneAndOnly 03-05-2017 11:09 AM

It shows a succession of seemingly nice guys at a bar hitting on the same woman. Each of them starts out gaining her confidence by showing that they're male feminists. Once she seems to buy that they're male feminists each of them gets vulgar and asks for sex.

MyOneAndOnly 03-05-2017 11:10 AM

what does Saturday Night Live fear about people in Brazil seeing their content?

So it's like a documentary

MyOneAndOnly 03-05-2017 11:32 AM

I could make a joke about RBG but i know that he's not really like that and i'd just be opening old baseless accusations solely for the sake of starting an argument

lol serious question though, is "I'm a feminist" a common angle for men trying to pick up women?

duovamp 03-05-2017 12:19 PM

I don't think any level of pious or condescending or patronizing behavior is attractive to other people but being a feminist is the only way to be so it shouldn't even be a thing to have to bring up.

i think this joke works on two levels. it's commenting on guys who are indeed feminists, but still display misogynist behavior, of which i think there are many such men. And it's commenting on guys who aren't feminists but use it to hit on women, which i think is a rarity.

Right, yeah. I would argue that virtually all men have vestiges of misogyny in their behavior, the same way I think any white person who says they never have racist thoughts is full of it.

But yeah the second one, I dunno, I guess I have never seen some total troglodyte pick up artist use "I'm a feminist" as a line, but I guess it happens?

Trotskilicious 03-05-2017 01:44 PM

some of the smart assy socialist women on twitter that i follow are always dragging dudes on that, maybe it happens more on the internet than IRL but i think these days you can assume any sketch comedy that is commenting on human behavior is actually commenting on internet behavior

the internet has really changed everything and we haven't really gotten our arms around it yet

duovamp 03-05-2017 01:52 PM

It's tough because you are under extreme social pressure to be a feminist but women want you to be one without declaring it or wearing it like a badge of honor. But whatev.

Trotskilicious 03-05-2017 01:53 PM

white women of this generation need to face the fact that they are just as guilty of being spoiled womenchildren

it seems like most of the critique is that we're all infantile medocre white men but this is coming from alcoholic waitresses who cosplay harry potter

duovamp 03-05-2017 02:01 PM

I love how specific that got.

duovamp 03-05-2017 02:01 PM

Fuck you Angela I care about things and I don't need your approval!

Trotskilicious 03-05-2017 02:07 PM

i know a lot of alcoholic single women who complain about infantile men, they really don't realize that they're practically the same. i mean what is lena dunham?

they don't always love geek culture but when they do its usually something something harry potter

duovamp 03-05-2017 02:11 PM

I think the criticism comes from the concern that guys aren't being sincere and are just pretend feminists because it's... socially cool or something? I don't know, it seems like anti feminist assholes get PUSSYGRABBING all day long.

duovamp 03-05-2017 02:12 PM

The fake geek/nerd shit is insincere too and upsetting. But at least I can talk about DnD with my friends and still found a wife so that's some #nerdacceptance

Kahlo 03-05-2017 02:16 PM

Virtue signalling ala Scotty

Trotskilicious 03-05-2017 02:25 PM

men are just as guilty of fake geek chic as women are, its kind of a cultural epidemic right now

Trotskilicious 03-05-2017 02:26 PM

i also don't want to give the impression that there aren't genuine female geeks, i've known plenty and i've had crushes on a few. they never are looking for someone like them, they want some tall guy from a magazine ad as far as i can tell

ah here i love this

I wouldn't say it's super common. From my experience, lots of guys believe themselves so above it that they don't realize when they are sexist or improper. They aren't necessarily declaring themselves feminists though.

What happens way more than it should is guys switching up their behavior almost completely when they realize things aren't going the way they want. I've had guys get really aggressive with me in the past because I didn't want to go outside a bar with them, for example.

Trotskilicious 03-05-2017 02:42 PM

brazil is a bit different than american white people tho

LaBelle 03-05-2017 02:42 PM

Also to me, there's a huge difference between feigning interest in something so you can "pick more chicks" and trying to enjoy something because you like someone who is into it.

^ It's one reason living an examined life is so much work/pain: it's gross to have to continually recognize and accept you have been operating on the premise of subconscious, sexist stories/patterns. But until u plumb for it and confront it u can never move fwd

It's like my male, white friends say, it's a real bitch keepin woke
