did you read Stephen King as a kid?

My kid went to an English coaching class on the weekend (long story) and when he came out he said

1. yeah, I'd keep going to that
2. can you get me IT to read?

I was like, I dunno, you're only eleven and IT is kinda for grown ups.

He's like "That's what we read in there." He gave me the excerpt and it was Stan committing suicide after getting the phone call.

Made me think about when I started reading Stephen King and I suppose it was about the same age.

when I was in 7th grade a read a Dean Koontz book about a genetically engineered dog with human-like intelligence and it was definitely the most "adult" book I had read. After that someone told me he's just a poor man's Stephen King and I read The Stand, some Dark Tower books, and some others too which I can't remember right now. I'm not exactly a model of mental health but I doubt Stephen King had much to do with my problems.

My mom gave me It to read when I was about 11. I didn't funny understand it. I was like "are they doing what I think they're doing?"

what's the worse that could happen?

I read Jurassic Park in 6th grade and that was definitely an adult book. Most kids at that age are still reading Goosebumps and shit like that.

FoolofaTook 12-12-2016 01:14 PM

I translated the Illiad from ancient Greek into Contemporary English at the age of four.

Hmmm that's a tough one ... is the kid really sensitive? I doubt it's gonna turn him into a killer space alien that looks like a big dumb stupid spider (srslyz IMO 1 of king's worst ever Final Reveals in a career chock full of let-downs) but might give him nightmares if he's at all afraid of predatory half-decayed sex ghosts

The thought of King being "the rich mans" anything is really cracking me up.

ohnoitsbonnie 12-12-2016 03:11 PM

I have never read one of Mr. King's novels.

Stephen King writes pop fiction, no question there. But he's a talented dude and he does have some good books and a few modern classics. Dark Tower is pretty cool, it's not quite like anything else I've read.

His writing level is probably about 7th/8th grade

redbreegull 12-12-2016 03:51 PM

btw I when I was 3 I translated the Dead Sea Scrolls

redbreegull 12-12-2016 03:51 PM

into Klingon

Elphenor 12-12-2016 03:57 PM

Yeah I started reading Stephen King at age 12 and I turned out fine

redbreegull 12-12-2016 04:14 PM

I read Jurassic Park in 8th grade and it blew my mind. Crichton is one rung higher on the pop fiction ladder than King.

i've never read a stephen king book, but dork sided is right.

LaBelle 12-12-2016 07:50 PM

I read a couple Stephen King books around 12, 13. But what really got to me back then was reading Frankenstein and Interview With The Vampire, those really stuck with me.

Also I loved Jack London's Call of the Wild, I had to read it for 8th grade and loved it a lot.

redbreegull 12-12-2016 09:45 PM

Stephen King also has a book about writing in which he talks about his own life and career as a writer twisted together with a lot of advice and encouragement for up-and-comers, and I would actually really recommend it to anyone interested in writing fiction or otherwise.

King is "typecast" as a horror writer but that's a super limited perspective on him. I mean I'm not saying he's a great writer, but he does have a lot to offer in the same kind of way as J.K. Rowling or other good pop writers, and shouldn't just be written off because of whatever stigma is there

buzzard 12-12-2016 10:03 PM

I soured on The Dark Tower when he began to talk about his own life and career as a writer within it, so I think I'll pass on that one.

It's a little cruel to compare him to J.K. Rowling, though, isn't it?

Elphenor 12-12-2016 10:14 PM

He's a good horror writer I liked the couple of collections of short stories he wrote as much as anything else

Christine sticks with me in a way that a story about a possessed car shouldn't

Don't feel like "good for a pop writer" is really something he should be tagged with

Simultaneously he's not the best or anything

redbreegull 12-12-2016 10:16 PM

I lost interest in the middle of Dark Tower 4 (I think, which ever one was the 600 page flashback). It totally interrupted the narrative flow and I was just super frustrated I had to read this entire huge detour book to learn what happens after the previous one.

Harry Potter continued to get better until the last book so

Elphenor 12-12-2016 10:17 PM

Come on Dark Tower is not Harry Potter level

I tried to go back and reread some Potter and was shocked at how shit It was

Used to love those books

Elphenor 12-12-2016 10:21 PM

4th book was pretty great turns full fantasy Western sadly when he returns to the main storyline it never reaches the quality of The Wastelands

People complain about the ending which I thought was fine what sucked was the final fight being decided by an asspull introduced not 2 or 3 chapters earlier

redbreegull 12-12-2016 10:23 PM

wow everyone here is so cool

Elphenor 12-12-2016 10:25 PM

Anytime someone doesn't agree that The Most Popular Thing is the best you say some bs like that
