Eh, the Electoral college hasn't voted yet. Plenty of time for the globalist NWO Bilderbergs to convince the electoral voters to become faithless electors and vote for Hillary, right?
|
My guess is you'll see one or two Electors this year switch their votes. It almost never happens, though, because the campaigns/parties choose their electors. Electors are the MOST loyal party hacks. There's no chance that 30+ Republican electors would switch votes.
Even if there was a block of GOP electors who wanted to punish Trump they would be more likely to use the opportunity to oust Trump and instead attempt to install Mike Pence, not vote for Clinton. What i think should happen, though, is that the Electoral College vote should be televised or at least filmed for CSPAN. And the individual Electors should be known to the public. For most americans it's not even a real thing. More than 40% don't know what it is, and very few people can even explain how it works (how electors are chosen/assigned, when it votes, the fact that some States get disproportionately more votes than others). FTR electors vote in their own states in Dec. They never actually meet in a "college" like they did at the beginning. |
One thing Clinton Electors could do to draw some attention to the insanity of the Electoral College system is protest by not casting their votes. Maybe also staging a walk out. It's typically a footnote in the news every four years. Why not use this as an opportunity to change that.

Guys, what do we do about the Paris Agreement?
The world agreeing to these climate targets is pretty much contingent on the biggest polluters, China and the U.S., upholding their part. If they don't, the developing world will go, "why should we handicap our developing economies by not exploiting resources when those guys got to become developed economies by doing so before we recognize that it was destroying the environment?" Trump's stance on environmental issues is probably the biggest worldwide threat I can think of. The possible wars are unknowns (he has some isolationist rhetoric, but also talks about bombing the shit out of places and taking their oil, is aggressive with Iran after Obama just started to fix shit with them, and is appointing the worst neocon hawks, like John Bolton and Michael Flynn), but on the environment, we know that he wants to exit the Paris Agreement, that he thinks climate change is a "Chinese conspiracy," that he wants to gut the Clean Air and Clean Water acts, that he wants to remove fuel-economy regulations... the world is fucked. Can the world just, like, band together and place sanctions on the U.S. if they exit the agreement or something, fuck. It feels like we were just starting to make some progress on climate initiatives. |
re: Electoral College
It should be abolished, because it doesn't even do what people think it's supposed to do (balance large urban areas with rural areas). With a popular vote, it would be mathematically impossible for a candidate to win the White House by campaigning in just the largest cities, even though that's what the defenders of the institution keep saying. As it is right now, eleven states could decide the election. About faithless electors, it won't happen, and even if it could, I don't think I would want it to. As much as I'll hate a Trump presidency, it would just seem like "cheating" to have electors act faithlessly. There's nothing legally wrong with it, as if one defends the institution of the Electoral College and the concept of electors voting instead of a direct election by the people, one defends that this institution isn't binding on the electors, and it would be cherrypicking to be like "We should have the electoral college because Constitution and shit... except that other Constitutional part of it, I don't like that part." But even though it would technically be fair under the rules, it just doesn't seem right, and it would give the left less to stand on when finally trying to abolish the Electoral College, because having had used it to their advantage might seem hypocritical. I say, accept that this election is over, and go hard on activism and disobedience and direct action for now (I prefer peaceful demonstration without property damage, but I don't hold property to be sacred, so long as it's not small businesses' and non-rich, private individuals' property), and when midterm elections come, get out the vote and try to achieve a progressive sweep of Congress. And keep the activism going to hold the Democrats to account. Become a Tea Party of the Left. Hopefully it's a Left movement that pays attention to marginalized people without the whole safe-space-trigger-warning fluffy bullshit that is often used to shut down discourse and can actually be quite patronizing to the marginalized people they are supposed to protect. Hopefully this is an angrier, tougher brand of leftism, not some HuffPo Buzzfeed bullshit. Also, smoke weed e'rrday. |
I've been speaking with some people and we are going to get together this week and put our heads together about what kind of stuff we can do in this community right now to help targeted groups. Time to organize.

Best case scenario:
Trump has no idea what he's doing and becomes overwhelmed by his new office and reaches out to former president Obama for some advice, because the two became such good bros during their talk. Trump is highly impressionable and his picking of Obama's brain effectively means another four years of Obama. Republicans are stunned and frustrated by his policy changes, being completely unaware about what has caused them. At the end of his term, Trump shares a beer with Obama and is like, "haha dude, remember when I said you were from Kenya? Good times!" And he and Obama laugh. Freeze frame, end credits. Next episode, Bernie Sanders wins in 2020 and initiates fully-automated luxury eco-harmonic space-democratic anarcho-communism and the human race expands into the stars. I-it could still happen, right? ![]() |

The only thing I can really think of is making sure Canada doesn't fall into the same alt-right nationalist pseudo-fascist gutter the U.S. and parts of Europe are falling into. We currently have a Liberal prime minister who is actually still really popular a year after the election, but Obama is really popular, too, and that had no bearing on the wave Trump rode. Maybe I'll focus my attention even more locally, on the provincial level. The NDP (party with social-democratic roots, but has drifted rightward into just a liberal party, though still to the left of the Liberal Party) is in power because people got sick of the Progressive Conservatives, who had rules for 40+ years, but the NDP's approval rating has already plummeted and I don't feel that they will win the next election. Since the PC Party is still in shambles, the party that will win is probably the Wildrose Party, even further right than the PC. And the guy trying to rebuild the PC is just as far right as the Wildrose, and the parties may merge (and if that happens, the NDP has no chance in hell). Maybe I should devote my efforts to trying to change minds about provincial politics so we don't get another shitty right-wing administration. Don't really know where to start, though. |
