Netflix

I miss the old Netflix. The one that seemed to have every movie ever and i could order them and the movies came in the mail. One after the other. I'd watch new movies and old and my favorites and it went on and on.

Now Netflix is like a channel on cable TV between HBO and Showtime. Most of the time it's better than either. But gone are all my favorite movies and the new movies and the old movies. And i spend more time trying to click through the menu and second guess the algorithm that organizes the lists of things it thinks i want to watch.

The old Netflix was like a fantastic cheat. Like somebody giving Blockbuster video stores the middle finger and offering a hundred times as many DVDs for $10. An all you can watch buffet.

I miss that old Netflix. Cause there is no longer an all you can watch buffet.

TuralyonW3 10-29-2016 09:09 PM

The trade off for some damn good original programming

MyOneAndOnly 10-29-2016 09:14 PM

Real truth. Some damn good teevee for sure

Elphenor 10-29-2016 09:22 PM

bet you wish you had blockbuster now

MyOneAndOnly 10-29-2016 09:29 PM

i never wanted blockbuster. not now either

MyOneAndOnly 10-29-2016 09:33 PM

Blockbuster was shiat. Cookie cuter assortment of new and old films. The illusion of variety and choice.

What I miss is the local independent video shoppe that had all those vids that blockbuster would never bother to carry. had a couple of great ones here. All gone now.

fuzzyroes 10-29-2016 10:05 PM

Blockbuster was great. I have a lot of positive nostalgic filled memories of the place. Those paper-thin carpets, 4-way shelving units all over the place filled with random big boxes of candy and band t-shirts, the display units where you could play the hottest new video game of the time.

Was really a fun place to visit and shop at.

redbreegull 10-29-2016 10:06 PM

have you guys heard of books

it's like a movie but you can load it instantly

MyOneAndOnly 10-29-2016 10:14 PM

when Netflix was still about mailing DVDs blockbuster started a DVD in the mail service which I liked. You could return your mail DVDs at a blockbuster store AND get a free rental at the store every time you did.

on the upside, now that these stores don't exist anymore, the chances of another Tarantino rising appear slim. *

I never got the experience ye olde netflix. By the time it got here it was already a rotating arbitrary selection of older streaming titles.

Can't even remember the last time I watched a film on netflix tho. I pretty much keep a subscription to access their original shows, and think it's worth it.

myosis 10-30-2016 11:10 PM

we still have the local independent video shoppe close to my home... they have a whole basement floor of xxx films for rent to keep them going, and apparently it's been working great until now. but they now close at 9 pm instead of midnight, which isn't a good sign.

cork_soaker 10-31-2016 12:41 AM

i remember when this was all fields

ohnoitsbonnie 10-31-2016 12:52 AM

This was a discount store

FlamingGlobes 10-31-2016 06:15 PM

This thread is the reason why I've clung to my physical media throughout the streaming boom. YOU'LL ALL BE SORRY!

FlamingGlobes 10-31-2016 06:16 PM

I use Netflix and Hulu, mind you, but I'm not one of those dopes who instantly jettisoned all of their DVDs because "Fuck yeah, streaming!"

FlamingGlobes 10-31-2016 06:31 PM

Does anyone else feel like they're just drowning in content these days? There are so. many. shows. I just can't even keep up with the ones I already like. I just can't do it anymore. It seriously stresses me out. I've started just checking out completely. Last week, I was on vacation but was home about 75% of the time. I think I watched maybe five episodes of television total.

FlamingGlobes 10-31-2016 06:31 PM

I'm more inclined to play on my laptop, listen to music and play videogames.

I read about a study which found (unsurprisingly) Republican men are more likely to pay for porn

redbreegull 10-31-2016 07:23 PM

also how the fuck could there still be a mom and pop video rental place where myosis lives? the independent ones went out here in the late 90s and the last blockbuster has been gone for at least 5 years

ohnoitsbonnie 10-31-2016 07:30 PM

He's from Quebec

I'd love to know what kind of porn Republican men prefer. Is it of the slapping women around variety? Or just your standard gay porn?

There's an indie rental store a few blocks down from where I live. They do well and it's a pretty cool place. It happens.

buzzard 10-31-2016 08:06 PM

There is a DVD-lending vending machine in the entrance turf of my local supermarket.

People actually use it.

MyOneAndOnly 10-31-2016 08:09 PM

Who in the fuck still rents DVD movies? I don't understand that shit.

maybe it's country music fans. cause they still buy CDs

reprise85 10-31-2016 08:17 PM

redbox is pretty popular around here, im assuming it's mostly people with little kids though

redbreegull 10-31-2016 08:29 PM

yeah redbox is huge here as well. I've used it a few times.

redbreegull 10-31-2016 08:30 PM

does netflix have a lot of movies? serious question, I don't have netflix but I only ever hear about people watching tv on it

I do? Not much of an Alan Jackson guy, though. I mean, pay $5 through Playstation store or $1 through Redbox when I'm already at the grocery store buying bananas? Why not?

I don't use torrents. Never downloaded a movie in my life. I hate watching stuff on my laptop. I'm a dinosaur.

I also still buy CDs. Wanna fight?

Netflix is terrible for movies. Unless you plan on watching a lot of Netflix originals + Scrubs, X-Files and Trailer Park Boys, don't bother.

Redbox to me is perfect for when you wanna see something like Batman v. Superman or the new Ghostbusters, but you know it'll suck, but you just have to see it just so you can tell everyone it sucks. I mean, it's $1.50. Minimal investment.

buzzard 10-31-2016 09:01 PM

Surely you're aware that torrenting media does not require that you consume it via laptop.

I used to have a PC permanently connected to my television, but recently bought a new one that takes an external hard drive directly. Strangely enough, it can even handle the HEVC codec that no computer in the household runs smoothly.

FlamingGlobes 10-31-2016 09:07 PM

I don't know man, that just sounds like an awful lot of work. I mean, it probably isn't. But I just can't be fucked. I have so many DVDs n shit and so many forms of entertainment already. I just can't.

FlamingGlobes 10-31-2016 09:08 PM

Plus I was told that pirating is not a victimless crime.

reprise85 10-31-2016 09:10 PM

you wouldn't steal a CAR

buzzard 10-31-2016 09:18 PM

I have several boxes filled with DVDs in a cupboard and usually download things I know are in there because it's less of an effort.

Take that to mean what you want.

redbreegull 10-31-2016 09:37 PM

FlamingGlobes would probably have to rent redbox movies two dozen times before it exceeds the cost of the cord to hook his computer up to his television
