Are there other band message boards

Where a bunch of negative asshats come and shit on the band and each other, or is that something peculiar to The Smashing Pumpkins

duovamp 10-05-2016 09:25 PM

Mals Marola 10-06-2016 03:11 AM

i imagine whatever guns n roses boards there are out there wouldn't be the most positive towards the band's existence in the past 20-ish years

LaBelle 10-06-2016 06:30 AM

Actually, I found a Guns N' Roses forum a while back that was mostly made up of people defending Axl's bullshit, it was sort of beautiful in a sad kind of way.

To me the biggest difference between netphoria and most forums is moderation really. Even when netphoria had mods they were never any good. The things you'd see here would never fly in other forums (like people saying they wish other boarders would kill themselves to stuff like lemonparty).

When I first joined that felt like I was sneaking into something I wasn't supposed to witness, and that was kind of interesting in a way.

redbreegull 10-06-2016 02:07 PM

I've always kind of suspected that the nature of SP's music is attractive to people with certain personality disorders and Netphoria would seem to support that hypothesis, but maybe other boards would be equally like this without moderators

ilikeplanets 10-06-2016 02:13 PM

They're all the same, and so are boards about things other than bands. Non-music boards tend to squabble over details more, though

redbreegull 10-06-2016 02:38 PM

I've only belonged to a few forums. before Netphoria it was a Tolkien board, and the culture there was obviously very different. this was also a long time ago though, and before 4chan basically became the culture of the whole internet

redbreegull 10-06-2016 02:40 PM

before that I ran the 2nd most popular Banjo-Kazooie message board on the web. I was the worst/most aggressive/craziest poster there

The non-music board I post on nowadays is super chill and friendly.
The only thing approaching squabbles I see regularly are the shipper arguments where people disagree over which characters should hook up in movies/shows.

is that rey and kylo ren?

ilikeplanets 10-06-2016 03:41 PM

The TV show forum I belong to is crazy nitpicky over details, but the show leaves a lot to speculation so people get competitive. The language exchange community is the nicest by far. I lurk a few different music forums but the people there are generally a little younger and it's too stupid for me to comment. Hormonal bullshit.

ilikeplanets 10-06-2016 03:43 PM

Even on the pumpkins boards, netphoria is a lot less fan fictiony and personally involved in BC and company than other artist's fans. Thank god.

He didn't exactly torture her. He was probing her mind and she managed to turn the tables on him, It was almost mind sex.

Also, yeah it's hawt. :D

redbreegull 10-06-2016 04:23 PM

uhh sex should never involve non-consensual penetration of someone's brain

redbreegull 10-06-2016 04:24 PM

also this dude killed his dad like really. rey deserves better

redbreegull 10-06-2016 04:25 PM

actually I hope they let Rey be an independent person and don't feel the need to bring a man into her story to make it significant. I loved how Finn began as a patronizing protective male but instead of her accepting it and getting with him (which is the trope, a la Taming of the Shrew), Rey is just like uhhh no but we can be friends if you can deal with that.

LaBelle 10-06-2016 04:38 PM

He is portrayed more like a damaged and misguided character than straight up evil, she could be the one to bring him back to the light. That's actually kinda romantic.

I don't see a problem with giving her a love interest, she can still be strong and independent in a relationship.

there isn't a problem with it inherently, it's just a trope that every fuckin story ever falls back on and it would be nice to see this trilogy follow its pattern of turning such tropes on their heads in a huge mainstream action movie

redbreegull 10-06-2016 04:53 PM

I thought TFA felt very socially aware, and that was its biggest accomplishment beyond being an enjoyable and well executed film. Main characters who aren't white men. Villains who, instead of being military dictators, are cowardly sniveling alt-right type dudes. I dunno, it just felt very current.

LaBelle 10-06-2016 04:54 PM

That's true. I'm just not sure making her a celibate space nun is the right answer.

redbreegull 10-06-2016 04:56 PM

I just think that there are plenty of stories out there that allow male protagonists to be awesome and woman-free, but there are relatively few stories which do the opposite, and when they do, they are generally considered to be stories aimed at "women," something which is somehow considered a niche demographic. It would be nice to see a powerful female hero who doesn't need a man in her story to give her some kind of fairy tale ending.

The love story aspect of Star Wars has always been very poorly done IMO so that compounds why they should just let her do her... also the Jedi are supposed to aim for non-attachment and Anakin's failure in that was a huge contributor to his downfall. I think it would be cooler to see Finn and some new strong female character form a relationship where he can learn to stop trying to hold her hand in times of peril.

LaBelle 10-06-2016 05:01 PM

Finn should def hook up with Poe :D

redbreegull 10-06-2016 05:04 PM

I would not be surprised to see a homosexual relationship of some sort in the next movie, although my guess is they wouldn't do it with established characters.

Although personally I've always thought a man as well-dressed as Lando Calrissian may have an eye for pool boys

redbreegull 10-06-2016 05:06 PM

grizzled old lando with some male model types and a bottle of colt 45

LaBelle 10-06-2016 05:09 PM

Lando's cape was fabulous

He was acting all suave towards Leia, but that felt more like overcompensating.

redbreegull 10-06-2016 05:15 PM

Bespin Cloud City. Tibanna gas mining operation, or front for one of the galaxy's most exclusive gay clubs?

vixnix 10-06-2016 05:44 PM

I would like to see Rey fuck a few guys here and there but be unable to commit to any of them because her #1 priority is always fighting for the light side of the force to defend the universe against the dark side.

But have the guys still be interested in being a booty call because it's still an honour if a powerful woman wants to fuck you when she's in town.
