Obama nostalgia thread

ITT you admit that you are going to miss Barack. Come on. Just admit it, you know you want to. I know he hasn't been perfect and yeah he's made some bad decisions. DROOOOONES. but come on. don't lie to yourself. look at this guy

Politico – GOP is like "Grumpycat," Obama says

Quote:

Then the president did a Grumpycat impression for the crowd at the Democratic National Committee’s meeting of the Women’s Leadership Forum, turning his own face into an exaggerated frown.
Quote:

He compared those denying climate change to people who were told by 99 out of 100 doctors that they had high cholesterol.

“Would you say those 99 doctors are crazy and part of a wild-eyed socialist plot to prevent you from eating cheese?”
Quote:

"I'm going to be supporting... whoever the nominee is,” Obama said.

The crowd laughed. Obama smiled.

"What are you laughing about?"

Trotskilicious 10-23-2015 11:29 PM

looked up "obama with goth daughters" and its spain

bert was still PM of italy in 09 i think

redbreegull 10-23-2015 11:30 PM

in seriousness though, regardless of anyone's personal take on the things he did, I think he is going to go down as the Democratic icon for decades to come. I think he easily replaces Bill

SOUL PWR 12-19-2015 01:18 AM

Obama could have been such a good president. Too bad he blew it.

redbreegull 12-20-2015 01:15 AM

at the very least Obama lands in the upper quartile of presidents. Really, he got more accomplished than Bill and was more liberal. He's the new Democratic golden boy.

SOUL PWR 12-20-2015 06:29 AM

what do you think Obama, himself, accomplished that was good?

FoolofaTook 12-20-2015 11:55 AM

Not being George Bush, for starters.

redbreegull 12-20-2015 03:42 PM

I'm not even speaking personally although I do like Obama. In terms of legacy, he easily accomplished more than Clinton. Clinton was very conservative in his actions and primarily seems so good because he did very little to put himself at risk politically or in terms of policy. Obama has a long list of things he said he would accomplish in office, and with two major exceptions (Gitmo and immigration reform), it looks like he's really cleaned up.

SOUL PWR 12-20-2015 08:20 PM

You're from Canada, right? Still living there? Or am I mistaken? Just curious.

So what are those things you think he himself has done that have really cleaned things up? A mildly challenging question, but an honest one.

redbreegull 12-20-2015 09:47 PM

nah I'm an American, two time Obama voter. The following all come to mind as big wins for his legacy.

–Obamacare

–"the climate president"... hopefully every successive president will be a better climate president or we are all fucked, but he's shown far more commitment to the issue than any other US leader. no keystone pipeline, paris agreement, domestic work to clamp down on emissions

–Iraq pullout including no permanent bases

–bin Laden is at the bottom of the ocean

–Iran deal, plus he's done more than any other world leader ever to reduce nuclear stockpiles even though this issue is out of media vogue and no one cares right now, I think people will remember his work on this later

–Cuba detente

–reform of NCLB

–repeal of DADT

–greatly reduced dependence on foreign oil

–net neutrality

–end Bush restrictions on medical research i.e. stem cell research

redbreegull 12-20-2015 10:05 PM

I'm not sure what you mean by "he himself." This seems like it might be a qualifier to dismiss things accomplished by his administration because they were eased into reality by the Republicans eating themselves, or dismissing the ACA because it's a legislative act. In a conservative sense, "he himself" might mean things he accomplished solely through quantifiable executive hard power. But I do not believe that is a good measure of the accomplishments of any president, and more than that, "legacy" is more about a non-scientific public consensus.

but if we wanted to go accomplishment by accomplishment, I personally do think Obama is easily better than any other post-war president. That's not necessarily through virtue of his amazing accomplishments, but most US presidents have been fantastically awful.
