Nailed it. I don't give a fuck if people are spreading awareness because they were offered a half price big mac for sharing the link, awareness is awareness and anything that has the power to influence attitudes towards positive change has some value, regardless of wether or not people came to it for the "right reasons"

Trotskilicious 09-14-2015 02:06 AM

i don't want to know anymore tbh

I gave up talking about asylum seekers because people reacted either negatively or indifferently and I felt hopeless.

I think people are interested in refugees if they seem similar enough to themselves. So Syrian refugees are an outrage, but darker skinned Sri Lankan refugees are an understandable and unfortunate problem, but we don't want them thinking they can come here on boats. But if some Syrians can't fit into Germany, we'll take some of them.

It's a particular kind of awareness that's spreading. Like I say, the white privilege grapevine had been activated. The awareness that we should welcome and be hospitable to all strangers in need of a safe place to live... Is not spreading, as I see things.

you think it's mainly the skin color or a lot of them being Muslims?

I wonder that myself, and really I have no clue since hardly anyone I'm talking to (well besides the neo nazis who yell what they mean through the subway station) will say "eeew but they are brown", instead they start talking about Muslims. Or it really IS the religion that worries them, and not the skin color.

oops this is a facebook thread - I guess you ment talking to people about it ON fb then, and not say, in your church community?

there is always gonna be someone waiting to diminish your feelings because vulnerability is easy to spot and fuck it. not everyone can do something. not everyone has an audience or a soapbox to stand on. "but this exists over here worse.." its just a rotating news headline when human atrocities have gone on since the dawn of the planet of the apes and just gets worse and at some point as a spectator you get disillusioned and desensirized to it all so much that when your brain cells fire off some empathy or sadness its just another day, another dead baby on the beach. and when we can we feel like we do sometjing affecting someone else but really we're just managing the guilt and humiliation of being alive or privileged in any way.

This, maaaan.

I've seen a lot of the default attitude people have is comparing tragedies and/or "why is everyone crying about x when y" as a way to look superior and discount people's real feelings.

hnibos 09-14-2015 09:52 AM

I'd say it has more to do with Muslim than skin color

a common one is whenever there is a story about animals being mistreated/poached/killed needlessly/whatever else, you'll always see the comment of someone saying something like why do we care so much about this and not (children being killed/mistreated/starving somewhere). I can STILL care about humans AND animals. They're not mutually exclusive. On cecil the lion stories it was a common thing to see for one.

MyOneAndOnly 09-14-2015 01:43 PM

just tell them you don't care about either people or animals

Why do people complain about members of the kingdom Metazoa dying when store shelves are stocked with products specifically marketed to facilitate the genocide of prokaryotic organisms and inanimate objects don't even get to have a life in the first place? It's just cladism and biocentrism.

You can just say "members of Metazoa".

We sing a song at church sometimes, and I play it on piano and I kid you not, it goes like this:

"Hold me, touch me inside, let your love burn in me now"

It sounds like a line straight outta Twilight.

There was also a typo one Christmas, where we were singing a special version of Jingle Bells that involved riding camels, and the words projected on the screen were

"riding his great big hairy thing"

But nobody else seemed to find it funny.

MyOneAndOnly 09-14-2015 08:38 PM

srsly not even pork ribs proper north of the mason dixon. next time somebody serves me me ribs covered in corn syrup sauce i'm going to punch them in the throat.

depends. not a good place for pork and beef bbq for sure. but that's a regional thing for a good reason. part of souther culture. but St Louis has some serious fucking good fried chicken. Chicago has damn good polish (sausage), italian beef. Detroit has the best dogs (coneys). Michigan is the best state in the country for whitefish (smoked). Michigan, Wisconsin have fucking great seafood - fried smelt and perch and walleye, trout.
