I met someone with an SP shirt at tire kingdom about 2 months ago and started a convo. she invited me to join this group. Turns out, some people from this board are in it. Weird right? So I joined it, people post and bitch about stuff and w/e. And he just joined it. So a chance happening for sure that I'm part of the group and met that woman, but it's not like he randomly joined some group not connected to SP peeps at all. but it's not an SP group.

i get that some people feel like "what if that was a black baby in an american city.." no one would care but i feel like thats the lowest hanging fruit to go and divert attention from the fact that people are intelligent and have these internal dialogues and some are more capabable at calculating where tragedy lies on a scale but doing that undermines the true feelings people have when they are not racist, uninformed or living in a bubble. shit is horrible. to varying degrees. everywhere.

there is always gonna be someone waiting to diminish your feelings because vulnerability is easy to spot and fuck it. not everyone can do something. not everyone has an audience or a soapbox to stand on. "but this exists over here worse.." its just a rotating news headline when human atrocities have gone on since the dawn of the planet of the apes and just gets worse and at some point as a spectator you get disillusioned and desensirized to it all so much that when your brain cells fire off some empathy or sadness its just another day, another dead baby on the beach. and when we can we feel like we do sometjing affecting someone else but really we're just managing the guilt and humiliation of being alive or privileged in any way.

I think I'm jaded because the attitude to Sri Lankan and Afghani refugees here has been intolerably cold and cruel, but as soon as there is a picture of a dead child they can relate to, everyone suddenly cares. I can't help but be disgusted by that kind of tribalism.

I don't think it's tribalism so much as it is a bandwagon effect and armchair activism. At the end of the day, the entire refugee crisis is being treated by most as a viral meme.

so i guess the care is directed at the media and the hates at the people that the media might have influenced displayed social media care. seems misdirected when the media, comprised of individuals who threw around words like migrants and diminished their suffering in a single word weren't doing any help in making people care until a light skinned baby that made everyone (the white people borg on facebook) care.
