it wasn't advertised as a show about nothing. That was an In-Joke that was introduced within the TV show after the series became successful. Its making fun of the show itself as well as the vapidity and neurotic egoism of its characters.
In many ways it was the antithisis of traditional boomer sitcoms like Cosby, Everybody loves Ramond, etc
