What would you say are the best Simpsons episodes?

I feel like it's pretty universally agreed that "Homer's Enemy" is the best episode of the show from a standpoint of demonstrating the intelligence and the quality of the writing and the satire, but do you have a personal favourite in terms of sheer flat-out-gags-per-minute quality?

I'd nominate "Cape Feare", "22 Short Films About Springfield" and "The Front" for total gut laughs by volume, and "Rosebud" and "Last Exit To Springfield" for overall TV writing brilliance.

I guess most of you, like me, hold a special place in your heart for "Homerpalooza" too.

Can't think right now, so I'll go for an obvious (old) one, the Monorail. Wasn't Conan O'Brien chief writer on that one?

Trotskilicious 09-05-2014 05:13 AM

he wrote the episode, but don't really feel like explaining to you how these episodes are made since you obvs don't care

anyway:

Lisas First Word
The Itchy & Scratchy Movie, which is also the first time homer demonstrates knowledge of the SCOTUS
Homer Goes to College and its companion episode Mars University

Selma's Choice, though, I think is my ultimate episode. Getting started with being blase about someone dropping dead and getting jokes out of mortality, plus lionel hutz "You'd be amazed how often that works!" Matriarch Bouvier: "Why don't she just give me the bowel obstruction that killed her?" Homer's "YEAH THE LEGEND OF THE DOG FACED WOMAN HA HA!" The fucking sandwich just basically kills me flat dead. I laughed so hard i thought i went insane, several times. At that goddamn sandwich stuff. DUFF GARDENS HOOORRAAAHHHH!!! then lisa tripping balls, bart and beer goggles "you're charming the pants off of me" the thing about the duff beeramid killing several migrant workers and selma goes "well there's more where that comes from." "With a line this long, it's gotta be good!" they fast forward through the length of and it's the complaint dept, and doris grau says "Get bent." It's just fantastic.

it's hard to say eps because so much of this is about particular bits, like the industrial chimney sweep "I bet the guys at the top work even harder!" thing to kick off Burn's Heir

Sorry for not caring enough about stuff you care about. I am vaguely aware it is written by a team of writers, that the main writer gets the writing credit and the others are listed as producers. If that's wrong, I'm sorry; I haven't seen The Simpsons in years.

Trotskilicious 09-05-2014 06:12 AM

ehhyeah ariel, we covered that. really not interested with discovering how you little you care about literally everything

Elijah Moon 09-05-2014 06:20 AM

Yeah, you've got me all figured out... Pat yourself on the back.

You Only Move Twice. Easily.

Elijah Moon 09-05-2014 08:24 AM

Anyway, Trots, let's not fight. I was once a huge fan of The Simpsons, it just hasn't been part of my life for a long time is all.

vixnix 09-05-2014 08:54 AM

Can't choose....

christian zombie vampires 09-05-2014 10:14 AM

my personal faves have always been Duffless, Mr Plow and the Itchy Scratchy & Poochie show

Homer vs. Lisa and the 8th Commandment is a good one.

The first four seasons are pretty great.

Bart the Murderer, Flaming Moe's, Bart the Lover, Seperate Vocations, The Otto Show, Mr. Plow

Episodes after season 5 are pretty much hit or miss.

fuzzyroes 09-05-2014 04:11 PM

Nice to see most of the great ones already covered. Mannn there was so many great ones back in the day. I haven't seen em in years though.

The one where Homer steals cable, The "I didn't do it" episode, Burns running for Mayor, Apu getting fired from Kwik-E-Mart are all classics that come to mind.

fuzzyroes 09-05-2014 04:12 PM

The Frank Grimes episode is absolutely classic though. Probably my favorite as well.

killtrocity 09-05-2014 04:31 PM

the one where Butters' parents try to kill him

I always liked the one where Bart and Lisa go to Kamp Krusty

Bread Regal 09-06-2014 12:52 AM

The Frank Grimes one.
The one where the Bushes move across the street.
The one where the fox voiced by Johnny Cash takes Homer on his spirit journey
The one where Homer gets fat for disability benefits

But really every episode from seasons 2 thru 10 is just so good. it's hard to pick a few

Ol' Couch Ass 09-06-2014 03:32 AM

Homer at the Bat is a sentimental favorite. The song is tops.

Trotskilicious 09-06-2014 04:09 AM

Well Coach Pop had done it
the san antonio spurs had won it
with dwayne wade clucking all the while

also this

and "Krusty has laryngitis and a bad back so he won't be doing anything or saying anything"

and the video where Mr. Black dubs over Krusty really super duper obviously

i think i agree this is one of my favorites top five no doubt

Trotskilicious 09-06-2014 04:12 AM

Sweet nourishing gruel!

Sonic Johnny 09-06-2014 08:38 AM

I got lent a book once with a couple essays about the simpsons in it and the first one in theire pretty much explains how Homer's Enemy (the Grimes episode) is the ultimate instance of satire on The Simpsons because it inverts the procedure by introducing a person who is for all intents and purposes from the real world into the Simpsons universe, and using his presence as a lens to comment on the show itself, as opposed to the exact opposite which is what it does the rest of the time.

That trippy scene is pretty cool

duovamp 09-06-2014 11:10 AM

Everything already mentioned, plus the gun episode and the beer baron episode. There are too many to pick... Homer at Bat... Fuck.
