There's a lot more to leonard's story. A lot of AIM politics and crime that outsiders do not understand about this case. He confessed his crimes to two native women in AIM, one of them being Anna Mae Aquash who was very influential among the people back then. Peltier also had a lot of power in AIM and a following of people who listened to him, but he went crazy and started making bombs and got involved in some other criminal activities. Women have come forward in the past few decades and said that he raped them back in the 70's. Darlene Nichols and Anna mae are the two women he confessed his crimes to and Anna mae came up dead, shot in the back shortly after. Other stories have been corroborated that she was kidnapped and taken to a farm in South Dakota, shot and left for dead. There is no proof of this, only a couple of people who have come forward and told the truth. The Aquash family, Anna's daughters are still seeking justice for what has been done to their mother. A lot of people don't understand that AIM had a criminal element to it, and that there are people who have gone to their grave keeping secrets of abuses on women and people that have been killed back in the 70's when the entire WK2 was taking place, and AIM's rise to "power". The history of this has been badly skewed.

Yes I cannot imagine why a movement by indigenous people would be violent in action when they have gone through hundreds of years of shit and oppression.

If he raped he should be put on trial for that. There is not suffice evidence that he murdered an FBI agent. Amnesty International says he should be released, which should mean something.

Actually, the violence began on Pine Ridge because of Dick Wilson, using a group of natives and non natives to exert control over the land and people. They were violent and abusive. The crimes from back then are still under investigation. One of the reasons my dad left the reservation for a few years back in the 70's was because when AIM arrived, the violence became worse. The movement itself was not appreciated by all indigenous people because they didn't want the violence. I don't support AIM because they refuse to look at their criminal history. When they start addressing it, and start discussing the rape and abuses on women/abuse of power within AIM, then I might change my mind. I prefer to give my support to other groups and charities that help my own people in non violent ways because it's proven that violence for the Oglala Lakota nation has given us nothing but more problems. It hasn't solved the real problems such as alcoholism, domestic violence, abuses/rape of women, illness, 3rd world poverty conditions, jobs, etc.

To understand Peltier's role in all of this, is to understand the inner workings of AIM and their criminal activities... it goes beyond just some heroic story of a native man who tried to save the rez. The leaders of AIM back then would commit serious crimes, then help one another cover them up.. then stand back and blame it on the feds. Until the truth is addressed in the situation.... it will always be the heroic natives fighting off the govt when it goes so much deeper than this. Dick Wilson and AIM brought crime and violence to the people.... they did nothing to really help at all.

I worked on the reservation for two years and never heard anyone express a similar view of the AIM. Perhaps those who did not like it have left, because the opinion I got (from those who had one) is that the AIM was the last time that Pine Ridge had a chance to be heard. Falsely convicting Peltier was a way to discredit the entire movement and once again frame native american culture as savage.

Most people under 35 didn't give a shit.
