how do you respond when coworkers say racist things

like they don't straight up say the n-word or anything, and most of them wouldn't. but it happens too often that we get problem customers and a coworker will say stuff pertaining to their race. for example today i was at work shopping (not working) and there was a woman being really loud yelling at either her phone or someone with her. the girl i work with who was ringing me up was like "i bet she's black, watch" and i was just like :erm:. we couldn't see her and we never did so it just kinda got dropped.

i mean i want to say something but i can't change them and i don't want to start conflict. pretty sure my direct manager also does the same kind of thing w/r/t saying racist shit.

obviously if they were straight up using slurs it would be easy to do something. or like, there's a particular transwoman who comes in the store who doesn't "pass" very well and i totally try to stick up for her or just deliver some education when the teenagers i work with are like hur-dur-huh-huh about it. but i dont know how to react to this other stuff. ideas?

I usually work with my headphones on so I just avoid all that shit, if you can do that... If I couldn't I would pretend to be deaf

My b/f has recently moved to a new apt downtown... and someone coming out of the bar with friends yelled "hey n, get the fuck out of here" when he was loading stuff out of his car. And kept talking shit about how they "don't want n's on their rez".

I politely tell them racism is a crime and crime is for niggers.

I'm conflict avoidant, so I don't say anything, but avoid them for the rest of my life :(

Oh God, this'll look like I'm after sympathy or obsessed with my current situation, but I am on a psychiatric ward and have seen my fair share of racism, etc. A patient recently went out on unescorted leave and went straight to a tattooist to get a swastika inked on his arm...

I was helping a girl with algebra at work the other day, and I was telling her how the Arabs invented algebra partly because of establishing the concept of the number zero. but as soon as i said "the Arabs invented algebra" she said "well they're still all assholes".

cringe

yeah there's lost of racism on psych wards, i forgot to mention that in my list of terribleness

Almost as annoying, we have the patients who are white gangstas, act like the worst black stereotypes, and suck up like crazy to any black patients.

most crackers i know who do the subtle racism are testing the waters to see how white i am and how much offense i'll take to something. i just don't respond and let them dig a hole (because most of them are aware that they are racist) and then i'll just do a perfectly-timed "...right" and roll my eyes. and then every once in a while i'll just straight up tell them they are idiots. but luckily it doesn't happen super often, so i don't have a go-to or anything.

last job i was at, i totally went to my supe and in turn he went to HR about racial remarks made in the security office because, if you somehow are dense, 95% of security officers are racist/homophobic/misogynist as fuck.
