Ask me questions about being a Latina woman...

I want to demystify some things. But I reserve the right to skip whatever.

Right now I'm in the middle of a 10-2pm volunteer shift before going into work at 3. Not one call so far so I am just reading and highlighting study material for work next weekend.

A man complimented my arms this morning. :smoke:

Ha! It's a great day for demystification. Where do you volunteer and is it related to being a Latina woman?

Elijah Moon 09-03-2014 01:27 PM

What's so special about your arms?

Rape Crisis Hotline. I guess it is related, but it's related to lots of others, too.

They're strong, limber, and long. And I wasn't wearing any sleeves.

Oh, a bit heavier than I expected. Admirable, though. Is it distressing at times?

Was that a stupid question? I joined an agency once and they wanted me to take calls in a suicide crisis place but I didn't think I'd be up to it.

duovamp 09-03-2014 01:56 PM

What were the things you wanted to demystify?

I think it was a reference to one of my posts in my "inpatient" thread, where I sounded pompous...

Dogfighter28 09-03-2014 02:05 PM

1) what is your exact nationality (or nationalities if your parents aren't from the same place)

2) what types of guys (or girls?) hit on you?

3) did you grow up in a multi generational household?

My gf is from Guatemala and El Salvador. She says they all hate Mexico because everyone assumes they are the only Latino/Latina culture. This mainly manifests in futbal though. She's friends with Mexicans so I don't think it's a serious thing

yo soy el mejor 09-03-2014 02:20 PM

1) Mexican on both sides

2) It's hard to tell because living in a city and being reasonably attractive I hear a lot of shit from lots of different men that I ignore daily. The guy today was white, baby-faced, mustached, and wearing shoes without laces.

3) Yes. With my parents.

That is a question you must answer within. And your answer will reveal your true question. Maybe I could answer it.

Have you ever had to deal with that awk thing where white people just assume you know Spanish?

Are you fluent in Spanish? ( )

What age did you first experience racism? How did it go down?

Did you have a quinceañera?

toase 09-04-2014 12:32 AM

In South FL everyone pretty much assumes you speak Spanish (more so the further south you go) no matter what your race/ethnicity.

killtrocity 09-04-2014 12:52 AM

do u liek tacos?

How long have you been a Latina woman that you feel like you can represent Latina womenz experiences? How are your experiences different than anyone else's that makes you want to answer questions on behalf of the female latinos? Are you being serious or just bored with the internet like everyone else.

How is life in Chicago different for you than it was in Texas? Big differences? Feel like you stand out more racially amongst other races?
Do you have hangups about "white people" or racist attitudes from everyone?
Are Latin womenz pussies horizontal like Korean and Vietnamese poon tang?

Cool As Ice Cream 09-04-2014 03:00 AM

how do you, as a latina woman, feel about tiki torches?

Trotskilicious 09-04-2014 04:14 AM

yes. one instance that pops to mind is standing in a line and the older man in front of me didn't speak english and the white woman helping asked if i would translate. i just said i don't speak spanish. most often i am just asked in conversation. and they say YOU'RE MEXICAN AND DON'T SPEAK SPANISH? iz not like all white people speak their mother tongue.

no. i am not fluent, but better. i can understand most and can have very very basic conversations with tim. a woman and man at work are helping me learn and i get a free subscription to mujer magazine...for the practice.

first i remember is going to a party around 10 or 11. my friend's cousin was two years older than us so there were 12 and 13 year olds there too. i just remember being outside and hearing someone mention spin the bottle. a boy looked at me and said 'but only white people can play.' omg i didn't even want to play *vomit*

i did not. i was a tomboy major at that age.

i have been a latina for 29 years. ya know, it's funny...i know some friends who, when younger, would pretend to not know spanish or pronounce their names differently at school and around non-family because...i dunno why. but it's probably the same reason i would lie about my fathers name - Saturnino. i just wanted to hide anything that would make me stick out and potentially be singled out. this is something i've talked about with other women at the hotline, too. we get each other even though we grew up states away. but mostly i'm just bored.

life is Chicago is a lot more rich for me. i am actively involved in my life and sometimes am actually pleased with myself and everything i've done in the last 3 years, which is a foreign feeling i still try and convince myself i don't deserve. but there is a more supportive voice within, too, that wasn't before. currently i am in therapy, working in an expanding job i like (most days), beginning level 3 of ASL, and volunteering 16 hours a month (1 year commitment). if i can work out my schedule i am starting flute lessons in october.

i don't feel like i stand out more, actually.
everyone moves a lot faster here than in texas, which i can keep up with - i'm the fastest walker i know! it certainly lends to an invisibility, though, that i appreciate but can also be depressing when i think about it. and i think TOO MUCH.

all racists can suck it. omg you tell me!

As a latina woman, how do you feel about postcards?

Did you get the one I sent back? I'm guessing 'no' if you don't live in Texas anymore.
