Ask me any question about being a psychiatric inpatient...

Better to keep it all in a thread than hijack unrelated ones. That's if anyone could give a shit what it's like on a mental ward.

why am i so fat

Elijah Moon 09-03-2014 11:35 AM

Because the meds they give you cause weight gain. (I do know you're not serious, btw).

Elijah Moon 09-03-2014 11:40 AM

I didn't mean to imply he's on meds, I was just answering his question as if it were related to being a psych patient.

That's not a question.

This is going better than I expected.

coldestrose 09-03-2014 11:51 AM

Yes, that's true. I guess no one has any questions, anyway. I just wanted to talk about my life at the moment, as I spent so many years focused on nothing directly important to me or that I'd experienced. I wore a mask of joviality and lived with my head in the clouds. It's not nice to admit to yourself that you're life has become total shit, but ignoring it all has never helped.

I thought if this thread could accomplish anything, it could help de-stigmatize and demystify mental illness. I can see how that would seem boring to most people, but oh well.

I just want to get rid of these amish rake fighters

coldestrose 09-03-2014 12:01 PM

Thank you for using my thread to become a Virgin. I'm flattered.

coldestrose 09-03-2014 12:04 PM

it felt so good

Elijah Moon 09-03-2014 12:14 PM

Here's a fella who knows what it's like. Well, I didn't have it as bad as Cage (never been tied to a bed, for one thing). The bits I relate to are "shuffling the hallways, fucked off," and "If I try to refuse meds they force it in me / Everything they write on my chart is a plot to bring me down..."

There have been people here with mental illnesses before

FYI

Elijah Moon 09-03-2014 12:23 PM

Yeah, I know that. I used to come here a lot in another life. I don't recall any posters who were long-term inpatients, though, and, anyway, I genuinely wanted to share my own experiences with anyone interested. I don't think I'm something special (quite the opposite) but some people don't feel like they can talk about such things because of stigma, etc.

yo soy el mejor 09-03-2014 12:27 PM

but he was going to de-stigmatize and demystify it for us!

coldestrose 09-03-2014 12:29 PM

How do we even know you were really an inpatient

I didn't mean it to sound arrogant, but it's just a fact that certain issues around mental health still carry a stigma. People would rather just be flippant about it. I don't see myself as a poster boy for mental health awareness but what can I do with the shit I've experienced? At least if I try to do something constructive with it (in whatever small way) it will mean my time hasn't been a total waste.

Order 66 09-03-2014 12:33 PM

well.. you've helped me at least.

Then my job is done!

Anyway, I might have come across as a dick but, you know, when I was here before I got really unwell, I honestly would've been interested to hear what psychiatric hospitals are like, what support you get, what privileges, what therapy, meds, etc.

I did think people who work in or study psychiatry/psychology would be interested, or anyone who simply likes to read about abnormal psychology, etc. I haven't been here for years, mind, so perhaps other people have already shared similar experiences and it's all old news. Or maybe there's just never been an appetite for it here.

i'm a psychology student and was previously an inpatient quite a few times, probably total 4 months or so over 2 years. last time i was in was 4 years ago. pretty confident i'll never be in one again as a patient.

so this has been talked about a lot on here, there are other people also who have experienced being sectioned... quite a few on this board actually

sorry for your ill health.
