So this is what people must mean by a job when they tell me to stop being such a bum, get off the dole and get a job. It sounds euphoric.

reprise85 08-21-2014 01:32 AM

i spend like 4-5k a year just on therapy/psychiatry/meds/etc, so that cuts a big part out of my income. shit thats a lot of fucking money. but without therapy i'd be insane and probably dead

so i think i made like 22k? last year but really after all that it's 17-18k. def dont have economic security.

really i made much less than that but im on a govt disability to work program so thats what i made with that program plus working 30ish hours a week and going to school

Trotskilicious 08-21-2014 01:34 AM

this is one of the best goddamn articles i've read in years

http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/20...moaning-moguls

essentially the thesis is that the rich hate the poor now and try to deny them social services and destroy unions and cut their wages et al because communism is dead and they do not fear organized proletarian outrage

so they suck all the profit out of the economy, give us nothing in return and tell us that we should have worked harder

they give loans out to people who can't pay them, sell a bunch of houses and when that bubble pops they get bailed out by the government, face no real pentalty, give themselves raises and then in a few years make more money then they ever did

and probably about 50% of the public thinks this is fair

reprise85 08-21-2014 01:37 AM

im going to have to start taking out loans in the next year or two. really gotta start going for those scholarships hardcore.

Shallowed 08-21-2014 01:37 AM

Previously, he has said that it might be good to raise income taxes on the poor so they had “skin in the game,” and that proposals to repeal the carried-interest tax loophole—from which he personally benefits—were akin to the German invasion of Poland.

should i just try to move up in publix? in 10 years i'd be making 6 figures but id be working at a grocery store 60 hours a week for the rest of my life.

im gonna try the college thing.

butthurt 08-21-2014 01:41 AM

That's not the attitude an aspiring urbanist should have!

Trotskilicious 08-21-2014 01:42 AM

it's incredible how there's a significant number of the disenfranchised and economically downtrodden who are supporting people like that to continue to ass rape the labor in this country

either way you're going to be working 60 hours a week

reprise85 08-21-2014 01:44 AM

maybe but at least it could be a helping profession

Trotskilicious 08-21-2014 01:44 AM

i bet somebody will just tell us that we're lazy and we either need better jobs or need to take a second one and this is a bunch of bourgeois whining

to be perfectly frank it's definitely bourgeois whining. ultimately when my parents drop dead i'm going to end up with two lots in austin that could conceivably be worth upwards of 300k dollars. I mean unless this place turns into detroit by 2024

reprise85 08-21-2014 01:50 AM

i dont think my parents have any money. they did at one point but *insert who fucked over who here*.

Trotskilicious 08-21-2014 01:53 AM

my dad did okay. he has some freelance work he does but that's because he's a real miser and he never thinks he has enough money for retirement even though my mother insists that they do, and tells me they have quite a bit to leave to me as well. that's nice, and something the truly poor do not have and i am fortunate in that

but he didn't work 60 hours a week to get here. middle class, financially secure even if he pretends we're 60 seconds away from wearing oak barrels and begging for spare change. he works extra now, not very much, just to increase his pile. that's what extra work should be, it shouldn't be to get to the very barest middle class salary like it seems to be these days, it should be for extra. but i guess that ship sailed and we're waiting for the miracle to come.

Trotskilicious 08-21-2014 01:56 AM

"be the change you want to see in the world"

so i should suicide bomb a bank or what, i don't get it

Trotskilicious 08-21-2014 01:57 AM

am i to be a labor leader who gets shot by omega concern

reprise85 08-21-2014 01:58 AM

my mom stopped selling her soul to her work. she was working as a buyer for the OR at a hospital and doing the job of three people. she had what she calls a "nervous breakdown" and stopped working there and started working at Costco and getting some kind of early retirement (she is 64. wait what, when did she turn 64? WHAT THE FUCK). she's much saner now. only

reprise85 08-21-2014 01:59 AM

i think my brain really has not processed that they are over 61. my dad is almost 66.

i talk about this all the time in therapy etc but it just now hit me for some reason.

there is a very good chance one of them will die in the next 10 years.

my dad is very overweight and a diabetic who doesnt take his meds and is a gambling addict

my mom is generally neurotic and has smoked for 50 years and refuses to go to doctors. she has never had a mammogram. breast cancer and ovarian cancer run in her family.

Trotskilicious 08-21-2014 01:59 AM

out of all of my peer group i know THREE MEN who actually have professional jobs and are financially secure

reprise85 08-21-2014 02:02 AM

and they are in their mid 60s, WHEN THE FUCK DID THAT HAPPEN

i dont think i know anyone in my peer group who is. i have a friend D and my sister C who are both on their way to PhDs. C has it pretty much set for her in music therapy and D is the smartest motherfucker ever and is an editor of a textbook on reniassance literature and teaching Shakespeare to lit majors

since his disertation takes forever (450+ pages) it will be a while. but he is getting paid to not teach next semester and just to work on his dissertation and personal projects. same $ as if he were teaching, except he gets to live down here with his family for 5 months and do whatever he wants, basically.

he's so smart he couldn't do anything but stumble into success though.

Trotskilicious 08-21-2014 02:13 AM

they sound like people who work all the time

noyen 08-21-2014 02:56 PM

Out of all the batshit I was raised with, my parents did a pretty good job of instilling the importance of family/personal time and I never got the feeling that WORK WORK WORK was important to a good life.

Sure they didn't plan for the future and are now feeling the pinch but they know how to how shall I say, "adjust expectations".

Dad's got some kind of inheritance coming when his mom dies although he doesn't know how much because he never knew his parents' financial situation ever. Could not tell you how much they ever made because that was never ever discussed in his household.

D. 08-21-2014 03:40 PM

Oh, and also to start an IRA, that was always preached to us. Started on like two years ago but by the time I cash out, we'll all be dead and the dollar will be worthless. Holler at ya boi.

hnibos 08-21-2014 04:45 PM

Yeah the world is going to be over in 50 years. Don't know why people insist on bringing children into it.

D. 08-21-2014 05:02 PM

Kids are terrible
