Political economics, specifically global political economics, is valuable to know, but only in the sense that if you're Barack Obama or the Fed chair you'll use that knowledge. Still, stuff like knowing how democracy affected the economy in the Republic of the Philippines actually tells you a lot about how groups of people think.
I say this as a person who in no way has seen a return on such knowledge. Aaaaand back to my beer and Doritos.
