margin!

It annoys me how politics as a science isn't really understood or taken as legitimate by the lay person. To them it's all opinions and no one is right and you can think anything you want.

But making a statement like "Global Warming is a hoax" or "Supply Side is good for the middle class" is just as wrong as saying 2+2=5
We just know certain positions are inaccurate at this point and it baffles me that they still exist because fuck science I trust "personal intuition" or whatever.

I'm not sure I have ever been so torn between tearing a post apart and siding with it 100%

Elphenor 07-09-2014 11:52 PM

Tear away

redbreegull 07-10-2014 12:00 AM

"political science" is an egregious misnomer, there is no science in politics whatsoever

I am completely with this though

Elphenor 07-10-2014 12:12 AM

I'm not really sure why you wouldn't consider it a science.

The things you study as evidence are for sure very different but still

Bread Regal 07-10-2014 12:13 AM

rbg you should make your top of the page post like 20 times longer

null123 07-10-2014 12:14 AM

I wish Chomsky was better than what he actually is

do you know what the scientific method is?

political science is, at best, a social science, and even then it is by far one of the flimsiest social sciences.

redbreegull 07-10-2014 12:20 AM

I almost majored in that shit, it is utter horse feces as a scientific study. I'm not saying there aren't valuable things to be learned from its study, but calling it a science like it's up there with physics is a fucking joke

You can form a testable hypothesis in P Science.

If X politicians run on X platform they will lose based on X Y Z.

Bread Regal 07-10-2014 12:29 AM

yeah, but the results have to be replicable.

redbreegull 07-10-2014 12:32 AM

political science is utterly, utterly useless in predicting future outcomes. Sure, there are lots of meaningful things to be derived from the study of what is done and gone... I'm not saying it's not worthwhile in some capacity, it's just as important as history or anything else.

but science? no.

Elphenor 07-10-2014 12:33 AM

I think in a lot of situations they would be.
But yeah, it's a social science, it's not like physics.
But it's a science nonetheless

Elphenor 07-10-2014 12:35 AM

I'm not really saying you're wrong, but I do think by pure definition it does qualify as a science.

But again, it's totally different than like physics

Elphenor 07-10-2014 12:38 AM

There are political scientists who predict the outcomes of elections with very little failure. If there were no science to it, that wouldn't be possible with any accuracy

Bread Regal 07-10-2014 12:41 AM

actually those people are called statisticians.

that's exactly correct. Elphenor, I kind of see where you are coming from in intent, but by the "pure" definition, political science has literally nothing, nothing, nothing to do with the scientific method. sorry dude. that doesn't mean it isn't worth studying. but it IS. NOT. science. at all.

Trotskilicious 07-10-2014 02:09 AM

i have to say i'm envious of margin right now

RBG, do you realize the NFL is an example of a cabal

this is killing me right now,

you gotta be a well known user here to fuck with us because that's the only thing to do right now

Trotskilicious 07-10-2014 02:14 AM

poly-sci (sic) is definitely not worth studying either, might as well send them to marketing school

redbreegull 07-10-2014 02:52 AM

right because the only measure of worth is $$$

redbreegull 07-10-2014 02:53 AM

I mean fuck understanding or knowing shit where's my money

null123 07-10-2014 02:58 AM

I took an International Politics class my first term of college. I can only imagine what 4 years of that would do to a person's ability to process reality.

who the fuck do you think you're talking to, nimrod's son? i work for a fucking non profit

political science is a waste because there's no point in studying "politics' there's theory, there's law, and there's marketing already.

Trotskilicious 07-10-2014 03:39 AM

and i studied it two year, and that's what i got out of it: philosophy, marketing, and public administration/law i guess

yeah I dunno I guess it was different at my school. I have no idea what you mean by marketing

Trotskilicious 07-12-2014 04:16 AM

i think it's because you don't want to see it

Trotskilicious 07-12-2014 04:16 AM

the parties are brands
