JokeyLoki 04-07-2014 01:05 PM

Can we get back on topic here? I need to know what song TOC wrote.

The Omega Concern 04-07-2014 04:28 PM

I worked with a producer who was friends with Beck and just about everybody else in the biz. Said producer was in a huge hospital debt as he fell ill while working with us. He kept telling us he was showing some songs of ours around to mainly movie people. Days later a bandmate of mine was bed stricken in a hospital, so I went from working in a A-list studio in Santa Monica to visiting hospitals for days and weeks. Bandmate never really comes all the way back into band mode.

A year later, I visit Beck's site because I liked a song he recently published. Instead the first song on the site is one that has a title almost exactly like the one I wrote and showed to the producer guy. It's a different genre but similar in approach and lyric.

I initially think, "wow. what a coincidence".

My bandmates each looked at me like some newbie dumbass who doesn't realized he just got reamed. "Duhhh...Bob showed it to him." "Welcome to showbiz", they say. To be fair, within the band at the time, I was the only who thought it could be a coincidence. How ironic is that?

Upload your song, you got nothing to lose.

I respect the hell out of Beck. I would just as well like to think it was a similar wavelength at the time because I'd rather not believe the alternative. My jaded muso friends really don't think so however, and they're prolly right. doesn't really matter anymore but since I opened up my big mouth...

If your a TROO Beck fan...you ought to know his song title at least from this:

who broke into the biz drumming for Frank Sinatra and Bruce Springsteen. Became a prominent session player back in the day and swerved into a producing svengali and developed a bunch of bands including Motley Crue and Metallica. From Clapton to Sting to Cyndi Lauper and Kelly Clarkson, he's produced and forgotten more music than most muso's would ever play. He has well over a hundred platinum records to his name.

and we as a band imploded on our own...Bob had nothing to do with that.

It's official, TOC is paranoid schizo.

Cool As Ice Cream 04-08-2014 07:51 AM

nope, his song is called Timebomb. released a year after I met the producer guy. That dangling fact does give me pause. I wouldn't think Beck needs any help however...

sppunk 04-08-2014 04:27 PM

Wait a guy who has a similar-titled song but it isn't the same genre or type ... is stealing a song?

You're better at copy+pasting conspiracy stories.

omg...you guyz r sumtin else...

on this one, i was in the minority opinion with these guys. From right to left, its Paul, Chris and Josh with Christophe singing at Act IV.

a year or so later we were at it as Cancel. a few years after that it all crescendoed alongside Bob. i was the newbie in terms of experience but they trusted me enough to sing, write and play our originals while telling me all along to watch out for the sharks in the biz. So when this all took place with Ticking Time Bomb it seemed obvious to them and I couldn't deny my feeling they were right and I got duped. those fuckers. lol.

TOC ripped off David Bowie.

Cool As Ice Cream 04-09-2014 04:13 AM

i think you'll find that it was david bowie who ripped off toc. the story involves this producer guy. i believe his name was bob.

this whole episode within the band became a bone of contention. I got along with Bob great. He's a big baseball and Yankee fan and I played the game so we hit it off. Played catch, watched games, sunset strip dinners and shit.

the band was excited to have front door access to the major labels and a showcase gig in front of us after the recordings. Ticking Time Bomb originally was a metal song. When i laid the guitar track down over the click track i thought we were setting it up for distortion later.

Bob asked for lyrics. I had no 2nd verse. ooops. Wrote 'em that night and the next day he gets me to do a vocal take. After one take he claims over his 30 years of recording, it's in his top 5 of favorites and thinks it's perfect. He shows it to Sony that night and the next day we're told we are going back to europe on their dime. Then the universe showed me what music really is and it wasn't the golden carrot i thought i was chasing.

just so you know -- my musician friends, my bandmates in Cancel, were convinced Bob showed it to him. It was like it confirmed their jaded opinion of the business they were always warning me about. I considered him a friend and didn't want to think that about him. But I hated the feeling I had they were right.
