i hope it wasn't one of the midnight vultures songs

Sonic Johnny 04-06-2014 12:59 AM

Yknow I had a feeling that "Mexican Jew Lizards Own My DNA" might have been ghost written

Order 66 04-06-2014 01:01 AM

well beck does believe god is an alien captured the souls of humanity in a volcano or whatever so it would kind of make sense

Starla 04-06-2014 01:08 AM

beck is a scientologist??

Order 66 04-06-2014 01:14 AM

yup

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perry_Farrell

Perry Farrell "believes aliens visit him and he accepts the knowledge and spirituality they bring."

killtrocity 04-06-2014 01:48 AM

That's no different than believing in ghosts or angels

Catherine Wheel 04-06-2014 02:04 AM

Also Farrell describes himself as a "intolerable narcissist who can't get along with anyone"

So he's an eccentric asshole just like Billy.

Catherine Wheel 04-06-2014 02:06 AM

It's interesting how believing in aliens isn't accepted by society as a normal way of thinking but believing in angels is.

Order 66 04-06-2014 02:08 AM

is it?

Catherine Wheel 04-06-2014 02:10 AM

It says a lot about how twisted society is. The concept of aliens is less believable to many than the concept of angels.

Order 66 04-06-2014 02:24 AM

if somebody told me they were visited by angels i'd hold them in the same esteem as somebody claiming they were anal probed by xenu or whatever. so would the plurality of people in "society"

Catherine Wheel 04-06-2014 02:28 AM

You think someone would be looked down upon in society just for saying they were visited by angels? I just get the impression that believing in angels is a more accepted way of thinking than believing in aliens.

Order 66 04-06-2014 02:31 AM

maybe in the tripod typology world of yours yes

Catherine Wheel 04-06-2014 02:35 AM

I'm just thinking of all the religious types out there that make religion a big business.

Catherine Wheel 04-06-2014 02:41 AM

Nearly 80% of Americans are Christian.

Why is it more socially acceptable to believe in God, than aliens, ghosts, etc.?
Without belittling each other out of respect, I would like to pose the question from a psychological standpoint of why our society accepts, even votes for people based on their vision and belief of a God which is admittedly invisible. However; if someone claims to see a UFO or ghost, they are treated just the opposite, with everything from verbal lashings to death threats.

Are these remnant's of the inquisition years? What drives society to allow this?

Last I checked the stats were similar. They both hover between 50%-66% at least in the US.

You are arguing your own false premise.

Rider 04-06-2014 05:42 AM

48% believe in UFOs.

There is one survey out there from a few years ago that get's quoted as 1 in 4 believe in angels, but that was one survey, others from the same time frame show numbers between 50%-60%.

The numbers vary widely over time. UFOs are at a low point right now.

Catherine Wheel 04-06-2014 06:09 AM

80% of Americans are Christians and so believe in angels. But a little less than half of Americans believe in aliens. It still points to angels being socially acceptable which is one of the points that I was trying to make. And 48% isn't high enough to say that believing in aliens is a social norm.

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/poll-nea...eve-in-angels/

Poll: Nearly 8 in 10 Americans believe in angels

All the points I was trying to make were accurate.

Not all Christians believe in Angels.

You are greatly twisting things to fit your misguided statements about religion and UFOs.

Just as many people roll their eyes when Carlos Santana starts babbling about angels visiting him and giving him songs as people do when someone mentions aliens.

The issue is more about that it's considered socially unacceptable to criticize religion and it's perfectly acceptable to mock people who believe in UFOs.

I believe in neither and in general think most people are loony who do believe in either. I'm more likely to confront and debate the UFO nut though just because it's more socially acceptable. This has nothing at to do with how I perceive the two though.

Rider 04-06-2014 06:18 AM

I also love the way you quote the flawed survey that I already critiqued.

Catherine Wheel 04-06-2014 06:21 AM

Why is it a flawed survey?

Because it dose not match surveys done at the time or surveys done since.

It was one survey that somehow got a huge number and copy paste journalist quoted it all over the place.

I challenge you to find another survey with similar numbers. All you will find is people quoting that one 77% survey from 2011.

Catherine Wheel 04-06-2014 06:27 AM

I already found statistics that say that 80% of Americans are Christian and this poll seems to support the belief that most American Christians believe in angels.

Rider 04-06-2014 06:33 AM

By the way the 80% Christian number is also flawed and is based on the highest result obtained in individual surveys. Other surveys get as low 58%.

Show me another survey not from 2011 that shows anywhere near 77% believe in angels.

Quoting individual surveys particularly ones that make news headlines is meaningless.

There was ONE survey in 2011 that showed these numbers.

Catherine Wheel 04-06-2014 06:41 AM

A 2012 statistic says 73% of Americans are Christian

Yep not getting the point about surveys and statistics plus I'm not even sure how we got from people who believe in Angels to number of Christians.

A I move the goal posts let me quote this one stat that has nothing to do with what we are talking about and is not even agreed upon by sociologists.

Totally not getting the point so I'm moving on with life.
