he's good people. |
i mean shallowed
and yeah, fb will go away eventually of course. not sure if there's predictions out there on what exactly will replace it, cause i have no fucking idea |
that's what i'm asking - will it be replaced or will the concept just wither and die.
when will people realize they are keeping surveillance on themselves? |
Linked in is the new Facebook I reckon, but it's all about employment. So it's like Facebook for professionals. They don't post selfies or memes, they just list their jobs so that other people with jobs can see whether or not it's worth hanging out with you, like you know, whether it will help them get another, better job.
It's kinda more honest and more shitty at the same time. |
wow really linkedin never heard of it you're really on the cutting edge with fuzzyroses who just found out what groupon is
|
Except be thinks it's just for concert tickets

Using and updating Linkedin seems like a big waste of time that could be spent actually looking for jobs and networking with people face-to-face.
|
that's because you're an idiot
|
Everybody I know, who has a professional job, is on linkedin. You don't use it to network with or arrange drinks with, you use it to work out who to email and say hey we haven't caught up in a while or hey, I was thinking about this professional thing at my professional job and I realized you are a good person to talk to about this, can I shout you a lunch at this new bar downtown so I can pick your brain? Crap like that. Or like hey you and the wife and kids wanna come ova 4 a BBQ? Just bought a new weber we can smoke something, been meaning to invite you over since we finished he renos on the new family area and we also got a dog last month. How are Xavier and anoushka enjoying st Joseph's?
Welcome to your 30s, vixnix. So far two people have added me on linkedin and one is my husband. Nobody wants to hang with a loser like me! I can't help anyon get a job anywhere! But man through my husband's work we're starting to enter the world of bbqs and he spends way more time schmoozing after work than he ever has before. It's pretty brutal and demoralizing. Luckily I'm a Christian so I don't have the brainpower to appreciate how truly shitty I should feel about my life, and I'm too busy making playdough for preschoolers and singing kum by ya to them to have time to ruminate on my many life failures. Go me. That rehabilitation was totes successful. Yusssss |

linkedin is a place to put your resume and jobs and have connections of personal and professional references at the employers fingertips
i've had friends recruited for employment through linkedin it is like facebook, but it exists for a reason. yeah you can use it to get beers with your work buddies and ask them "professional questions" that nebulous concept about people giving a shit about work but it's primarily a system like seriously fucking shut up, you don't even know what you're talking about |
Yeah of course it's that...but it is also a way to check out where people are moving to, which new companies etc., and what kind of work they're doing.
People definitely keep an eye on each others' profiles and work out how to keep contact with people who are in useful positions at successful companies. And in higher paying jobs people tend to hire people they like, and recommend people they like, and you can't tell that from a linkedin profile. But going for Friday night drinks somewhere is helpful. If you're looking to secure contracts worth millions of dollars, then you need to be thinking about which people to establish relationships with and keep contact with and endear yourself to. It's fake and crappy but it's human and it's how deals are struck it seems - it's all about making an impression. Which is exactly like Facebook, except it also involves your income and occupation and not just your weekend lunch preferences and buzzfeed quiz results |
No kidding, you use social networks for that

Did those friends of yours that were recruited through Linkedin apply for those jobs first, or were they approached?
Every job website I have used gives the option of uploading a CV and a profile so prospective employers can gauge you without bothering with going through the job listing process, possibly approaching you if they feel you could be suitable, but I've never been approached. Among the sea of Linkedin users that are more qualified than I am, I don't feel like I'm any more likely to be approached through Linkedin than I am through any other website. Responding to job listings or cold calling a company myself at least narrows down my competition to those who apply. |
Guys I think we need Juliana's expertise here

(by the way your linkedin profile = your CV) |
My CV is a document that I wrote, a Linkedin profile is what Linkedin wants my CV to be.
|
well you're the expert, not knowing what "recruiting" means
|
your cv is precious too, you shouldn't ever change it
i mean the formatting is your passion |
I have multiple CVs depending on what type of job I'm applying for.
So from what I'm gathering from your minimal and typically sarcastic responses is that your friends were approached by someone through Linkedin, and it could happen to me too if I put time into my Linkedin profile, as opposed to any other job site that offers a profile. |
your responses are chock full of know-it-all little kid syndrome
all i'm really saying is stop being so fucking convinced that if you don't understand or know anything about it, it must not be worth any time why hamstring yourself in any way, register on all the job sites, create profiles on all the social job networks who exactly are you trying to impress |

And the reason why I'm not on all of the job websites just comes back to my original comment, it just feels more productive applying for jobs myself than it does creating and maintaining an online profile and still not getting any leads from that avenue. Actually I lie, I did once get a lead, there was a guy who was in a band I once recorded who sent me a message asking me how I'm going and linked me to some of his new music. I responded commenting on his music and asked for his Facebook and/or phone number and I never heard from him again. Apparently he doesn't check his Linkedin often and the email he provided on his profile is a work related email, the inbox of which is filled with unread automated job search and Linkedin shit. I later found that out when I happened to find him on Facebook. He's based in a different part of the country now. But it's good that your friends got picked out by someone on Linkedin. I do like the idea of a job finding me and not the other way around, despite being told by everyone that a job won't just fall into my lap. Unless you're already working in the field. I work in a bakery and want to work in the audio industry, the only way I figure I can get an audio job through my current field is to probe customers who mention in passing that they work at blah blah radio station or blah blah TV network and impress them with my customer service. As they say, it's easier to get a job once when you've already got a job and I have seen for myself the leverage it can provide. Otherwise I could always go from front-of-house to a trainee baker position. Sorry if that last bit came off as too "know-it-all" but I do welcome any ideas. |
Perhaps where I went wrong with Linkedin is not showing enough interest for BBQ invites. Social media expert Juliana, what do you think?
|
that was vixnix being all stupid about linkedin. that's not to say drooliana isn't a total blowhard.
|
Oh I know but she is a social media expert after all, she said so herself, that's gotta be at least doubley experty than anyone who doesn't claim to be an expert.
Not that I'm an expert on experts, I should make that expertly clear. |
shallowed i know it's from "your experience" but you have very little of it
i mean if you're still primarily doing walk ins then you haven't exactly entered the professional sphere |
