Yeah, I guess, and it's easier to be a vulture these days. WTF is wrong with everyone? It's all about the clicks and who had it first.

It's a sad modern-day Tinkerbelle dying... only facebook likes and retweets will save her.

The passengers are of 13 nationalities, the airline said. They were from ... United States (4).
Great, now I have to give a fuck.

This is why I have a crippling fear of flying.

And I don't like heights.

Airplanes don't fall out of the sky without notice unless catastrophic circumstances. Pilot error, suicide or terrorism (tensions high after the knife attacks last week) is a good bet. This is a busy shipping area with no debris found, I'm pretty confident the plane exploded and disintegrated for some reason. There was no real pilot communication so whatever happened was immediate.

Too bad Malaysian Airlines doesn't apparently subscribe to ACARS, that really helped the AF447 investigation.

I love the 777 - one of the safest aircraft ever built.

I think it's reasonable fear to have, because most people don't fly everyday whereas we're so used to driving or being in a car all our lives that it becomes a very natural thing, and it's easier to put the dangers out of your mind.

Plus as duo said there's the fear of height involved.

I understand that, but it's actually like the opposite of reasonable. In any given year, worldwide deaths from commercial air crashes are between 500 and a thousand people (or less). 35-40 thousand people die annually in automobile crashes in the US alone. You are many, many, many times more likely to get killed every time you get in your car then getting on an airplane. Our brain makes mental shortcuts (heuristics) a lot that lead us to bad conclusions. Because airplane crashes are sensationalized in the news (partly because they are uncommon) people fear airplanes more, but it's not reasonable because it stems from gut feelings and not from actual information

I'm way safer. Last time I checked my car had safety precautions in case of a crash. Which won't result in me plummeting miles to my death.

So an explosive that powerful was somehow snuck on board?

It happened with TWA800, which this is somewhat similar to in aftermath IMO. I am skeptical it is terrorism but it is a theory that must be studied given a plane that is inherently safe is no where to be found.

The lack of communication is key. AF443, BA38, etc. all had some communication yet were disasters.

duovamp 03-08-2014 07:33 PM

I'm gonna say it was aliens.

you're actually like 50 times more likely to die, but whatever allows you to sleep at night I guess

statistically false

besides you've already confessed to being a speed demon which only increases your chances of a driving fatality

Trotskilicious 03-08-2014 07:41 PM
