what would you guys say to someone who believes...

that men are as oppressed as women? I want to say something intelligent but I don't even know where to start. Like, the first piece of evidence that I want to present is that I live on Earth. what next

slunken 02-10-2014 12:31 AM

i believe a case could be made - but its nearly impossible to compare suffering especially when it's not physical. You're pretty much always wrong when you try to present THIS is equal to THIS.

slunken 02-10-2014 12:37 AM

I would say that there are equal amounts of "hazing" and societal pressures in terms of growing up to be a man and growing up to be a woman.

But once you enter the adult world and stop becoming an individual things get even more twisted and weird and out of control once you fall into more complex social situations.

It's a pretty vague concept.

really i guess the question is oppressed by what?

Bread Regal 02-10-2014 12:39 AM

appeal to their current position and tell them that the patriarchal society we live in negatively affects both genders.

and then show them a toys r us catalog.

Eulogy 02-10-2014 12:39 AM

I would tell them I think they're a fucking moron and then I'd never speak to them again unless I had to.

Bread Regal 02-10-2014 12:42 AM

i mean.

i wouldn't call them a moron. i dont fully subscribe to the idea that "its not my job to tell you why youre an asshole" especially if the person is somewhat willing to have a conversation about it.

but you need to use simple persuasion tactics. usually a persons experience is legitimate. perhaps their dad got screwed over during a divorce or their mom was abusive and manipulative and this has affectedtheir perception of all women.

Eulogy 02-10-2014 12:43 AM

But he's clearly a moron. Got no time for that shit anymore. Unfixable.

Order 66 02-10-2014 12:43 AM

i'd ask him to go to olive garden with me to discuss it further

slunken 02-10-2014 12:43 AM

i'm only saying that if you were to isolate both groups (males and females) you would see that each gender goes through a certain hazing ritual of oppression and experimentation within their own gender.

in that sense you could say that both genders are oppressed, as some members adapt more quickly than others and some who do not adapt at all and contstantly feel like outcasts.

but yea once you mix the two groups the males dominate ultimately. it depends on how far up (or down) the ladder you want to go.

Bread Regal 02-10-2014 12:43 AM

but that doesn't mean their interpretation of the situation is correct.

slunken 02-10-2014 12:44 AM

eulogy always a quick-draw with the namecalling

Bread Regal 02-10-2014 12:45 AM

seriously, just show them the toys r us catalog. it's a surprisingly compelling display of the unrealistic expectations of women ingrained in them from infancy.

Bread Regal 02-10-2014 12:47 AM

redbreegull 02-10-2014 12:49 AM

both of these people went to hippie college with me too, I don't know what the fuck they learned there. And one of them is a woman!

failing to see what is inherently straight and white about that

Bread Regal 02-10-2014 12:53 AM

hey slunken, maybe you could further elucidate your postion on the matter YOU FUCKIN BREEDER

Eulogy 02-10-2014 12:56 AM

Well as a white male I recognize the inappropriateness of claiming men have it as bad as women.

Eulogy 02-10-2014 12:57 AM

It's like a white person complaining about reverse racism.

It just shouldn't be done.

Bread Regal 02-10-2014 12:58 AM

are you saying men don't undergo depression for adhering to specific gender norms.

like you

as a gay man

are saying that.

Eulogy 02-10-2014 12:59 AM

No I didn't say that.

Bread Regal 02-10-2014 01:00 AM

then we're just going past eachother then i guess. what, specifically, about slunkens post was so objectionable.

duovamp 02-10-2014 01:01 AM

I would respond by oppressing the shit out of a woman right then and there.

Eulogy 02-10-2014 01:02 AM

His response to an inquiry regarding someone who thinks men are as oppressed as women was to defend that person's idea as reasonable. An opinion I think is poisoned by privilege.

Lucky Day Spa 02-10-2014 01:04 AM

get him to watch this

and you know someone doesn't arrive at that postion out of nowhere. if they're going to try and justify their position with personal experiences, then it's probably to best to legitimize their feelings but not not necessarily the conclusions they come to regarding gender relations.

Bread Regal 02-10-2014 01:11 AM

i mean, this is persuasive discussion 101.

Eulogy 02-10-2014 01:11 AM

Your response was dumb too.

Happy?

Eulogy 02-10-2014 01:12 AM

If you want to be a misogynist apologist that's your business. As I said, I have no time for that shit anymore.

Bread Regal 02-10-2014 01:14 AM

apologist.

Bread Regal 02-10-2014 01:14 AM

i'm a misogynist apologist for recognizing cognitive biases in others.

Bread Regal 02-10-2014 01:14 AM

alright.

Trotskilicious 02-10-2014 01:23 AM

except one these people is a woman, so do I just chalk this up to mental deficiency? She's telling me I am being sexist by painting women as perpetual victims when they are "strong and always have been"

I told her she was an anti-feminist

Bread Regal 02-10-2014 01:28 AM

no time for them

redbreegull 02-10-2014 01:31 AM

"we don't need your pity"

Bread Regal 02-10-2014 01:34 AM

it's really quite a shame though. the messaging has been strong and persistent enough to where many women have a completely warped perception of what feminism actually is.

Trotskilicious 02-10-2014 01:39 AM

or make jokes about how terrible feminists are
