Sochi / Olympics thread?

duovamp 02-05-2014 11:04 PM

We don't have one yet?

Reports I've heard so far:
You can't use the water in some facilities because it contains some unsafe chemical
Many rooms have no furniture except the bed
Very any rooms do not have door knobs
Most rooms do not have lights

Yeah that's going pretty well, and I'm pumped. Anti-gay and corruption aside, this is going to be a beautiful disaster.

duovamp 02-05-2014 11:05 PM

Oh drink it you pussies.

Thousands of stray dogs are being killed in Sochi so visitors to the Winter Olympics are not bothered by them.

Until now, the dogs have been living amid the mud and rubble of Olympic construction sites, roaming the streets and snowy mountainsides.

But as the Games draw near, Sochi authorities have commissioned a company to catch and kill the animals so they do not create a nuisance.

Order 66 02-05-2014 11:08 PM

theyre making up for the homophobia by pandering to scatophiles

duovamp 02-05-2014 11:08 PM

They eat the poo poo.

pavementtune 02-05-2014 11:09 PM

These rooms are where some journalists ended up, right? No hot water either.
I haven't read much, but the rooms for athletes seem to be better.

Ski. Flying!

redbreegull 02-05-2014 11:09 PM

all the shit about the bad conditions in hotel rooms and stuff, I assume these people have never traveled outside the US before?

hnibos 02-05-2014 11:09 PM

Russia is a shithole and even though their holding the olympics they can't mask what a shithole it is. Who would have thunk that?

Yeah people that can afford to go to the olympics half way across the world have never left the us. Makes sense.

redbreegull 02-05-2014 11:11 PM

I mean the shit paper going into a bin instead of down the toilet, that's how it is in a lot of places in the world...

Well they bought the Olympics (surprise) and their government is selling the Olympics to the most corrupt, lowest bidder, who will split the extra money. TOC should be having a fucking field day with this dump, except it's all true so it's mostly depressing.

then I'm not exactly sure why they are surprised that their hotel rooms have issues with hot water or that you can't flush toilet paper?

Because it's the olympics and this corrupt piece of shit organization can't even have clean or hot water for it's guests.

hnibos 02-05-2014 11:15 PM

I mean, isn't this an opportunity for Russia to showcase the best of the best they have to offer and people get orange water? I mean really

Well, hockey players are usually pretty big guys and this team is one of the main competitors for the Russian team and if they move an inch they'll fall off the bed. Fair play out the window.

Quote:

In the six and a half years since the I.O.C. awarded the 2014 Winter Olympics to Russia, the state has disbursed more than $50 billion to prepare Sochi and its surroundings for the Games. Most of that money is being paid directly from the federal budget to various contractors. Billions go through Olympstroy, the state Olympic construction authority, which has had four directors in six years. These will be the most expensive Olympic Games ever mounted. (The Games in Vancouver, site of the previous Winter Olympics, cost only $7 billion.) How much of Russia’s $50 billion has gone to fund Olympics-related activity and how much covers kickbacks, bribes, and shakedowns is anyone’s guess. Basic bookkeeping is not prioritized. A Moscow friend, a foreigner who has worked as a senior manager for several Olympics, says, “I have never seen a budget in Sochi.”

Money well spent taking care of the world's athletes.

I'd expect throwing your used turd paper into a bin beside your feet out of Yemen or Somalia, but for costing 4x as much as Vancouver, you sort of wonder where the money spent on it went.... Oh wait...

*shrug* I dunno, this is pretty much what I would expect if I went to a developing country. I guess you are right, they should have been able to fix problems with the water and shit like that? Dunno, there are places in the US where it's not even safe to drink tap water. Just feels a lot like some pampered first worlders being shocked at how other people live

duovamp 02-05-2014 11:22 PM

IT ISN'T A DEVELOPING COUNTRY. IT HAS TAKEN OVER FOUR TIMES THE AMOUNT OF MONEY ALREADY AS VANCOUVER.

duovamp 02-05-2014 11:22 PM

FFS.

duovamp 02-05-2014 11:23 PM

Look guys, this is the best we could afford with what we had. Now if you don't mind, I'm going to be leaving on my golden helicopter to land on my crystal yacht where I will drink unicorn jizz from the antler of an esquilax, to discuss an unrelated matter.

I mean there are countries in Western Europe where you can't flush toilet paper. Vancouver also is located in a rich developed country that has probably had good pipes for the better part of the last century. Sochi is in a poor as shit, corrupt as shit, backward as shit, quasi dictatorship with an economy built on ejaculatory soviet military spending and gulag slave labor, which made up 5% of the country's entire population just a few decades ago.

all I'm saying is, I'm not surprised and I'm not sure why others are either

Ah I see, the bed size. Didn't London last summer manage to provide 165cm beds and the athletes ended up sleeping on the floor?

duovamp 02-05-2014 11:26 PM

Correction, it isn't poor as shit, it's just corrupt as shit.

50 billion dollars or whatever and it's the olympics.

redbreegull 02-05-2014 11:31 PM

duovamp, russia is a developing country and most people who live there are poor. as. shit. there are places in russia where people still live the way they did in the era of the czars. also, this looks like 50 billion to me right here. why is it surprising that 50 billion was not enough to turn a city in a despotic wasteland into something even remotely equal to Vancouver, fucking Canada?

So basically you're completely missing the point. What's upsetting is that this shit (from the link I posted and you didn't click and read):

Quote:

All told, Rotenberg-controlled companies have won Olympics-related contracts worth $7.4 billion. In the last two years, according to a report compiled by Russian political-opposition figures Boris Nemtsov and Leonid Martynyuk, the Rotenbergs’ personal fortune has increased by $2.5 billion.
happens in a place where so many people are living in destitute poverty. These Olympic games aren't about proving anything. It's about finding another way to squeeze more money out of the people and hand it to the wealthy few.

duovamp 02-05-2014 11:35 PM

But you're saying it's acceptable because there are some poor-ass people in Russia. Okay, you got me there.

are you retarded

you said it's not a developing country, it really is. your other point had nothing to do with that

duovamp 02-05-2014 11:39 PM

No no no, everything that we've seen so far in Sochi is perfectly fine because poors.

redbreegull 02-05-2014 11:42 PM

ok, so you are retarded.

duovamp 02-05-2014 11:44 PM

Okay yep, and if you spend 50 billion dollars on Sochi, it's all going directly into hard costs which is why those pipes are the best Russia could do with their money.

Not because of corruption.

Because the equivalent of $50,000,000,000 only gets you bowls with water in Russia. No flushing.

redbreegull 02-05-2014 11:49 PM

Athens had the olympics not too long ago and you certainly cannot flush toilet paper there, the streets are covered in dog shit, and you aren't supposed to drink tap water. And this is in a fully developed, modern cosmopolitan city.

redbreegull 02-05-2014 11:50 PM

look up before and after pictures of sochi and think for a few minutes about how much it costs to redevelop an entire city
