also how much did you actually participate in this training, i think a lot of animal know it alls tend to think it's really easy since they actually just lived with a well trained dog and took partial credit

i have caught chauncey raiding the cat box so many times, i have scolded him and put him in time out. these things worked for stuff like widdling on the floor or takin a doozer on the rug but it has never worked for cat shit. it's meth to him.

i have to watch him outside to make sure he's not unearthing treasure troves of moldering cat feces. it's really incredible the dedication and it doesn't matter how much i scold him, even when you catch him doing it, or what have you he's just compelled to fill his face with it

on the other hand the other dog doesn't even bother with it, and she is not well trained

all dogs are different and are therefore motivated by different things. you're lucky to have dogs that don't love eating shit. many dogs love eating shit to the point where nothing, and i mean nothing, will get between them and their shit unless you drag them away and pick it up. this isn't a behavioral problem.

some dogs enjoy praise. others favor milkbones.

yeah, the guy was really big though, he had at least 4 or 5 inches on me, and I was behind him. He was kind of in a doorway IIRC and was going forward towards my ex. Like I said in my original post, what happened didn't involve higher level decision making. There was just this singular moment when my brain was like well she is either gonna get hit or you could get him, who do you wanna be? Then it was just an adrenaline blur. There was no real choice to be made.

redbreegull considering how often you are wrong, and how often you overestimate your own capability i'm pretty much going to guess that you're full of absolute shit and i wonder if you even have been the sole provider for a dog, responsible for all of its training and etc. I'm pretty confident you're taking credit for your family's dogs, and further, i'm also thinking there's several other factors contributing to the idea that you're just the best dog trainer in the whole world

there are multiple things that can contribute to that kind of behavior, pavementtune. sometimes it is the result of a health issue that affects the dog's sense of smell. they are compelled to lick things because it helps them detect odors more easily.

other than that, there is nothing you can do beyond keeping the shoes out of reach. if shoes taste good, they taste good and it'd be like leaving a steak on the floor while you're not home and asking them to not eat it.
