beans if there is no meat (as in "vegetarian" or 5+ bean chili), which calls for a bit more heat.

it can be good either way, but I was raised on just meat. my mom always says beans in chili is a northern thing

a better question is should chili be spicy? for me this isn't even a question... why would anyone bother eating mild chili? it seems a lot of people think chili just means beans and meat sauce though.

look I have nothing against beans in chili, like I said it can be good either way. but to suggest that chili is incomplete without beans is a position of ignorance. clearly you have just not been exposed to the alternative

I don't care whether it's right or not, for me it's gotta have beans. Partly for taste, and partly for fibre. Ain't nobody in their right mind be putting plain ground meat into their guts like that and expecting good news.
