A&E knew Phil Robertson was a bigoted racist homophobic creep before they gave him a show. I've never watched duck dynasty so I watched the very first episode last night to see what the whole thing is about. It's obvious that this family is a bunch of back wooded right wing Christian conservatives. There's some video out there of him preaching against gays long before this show ever aired. I don't know why A&E gave him a show.

Because they thought they could make a few bucks on another low-budget reality show where America will laugh at a bunch of Hillbilly's.


When the show became a cultural phenomenon for its non-PC disposition as well as showcasing a strong family background, you just know those suits in New York couldn't deal with it. They started to warn him about speaking his mind a bit too much and likely set him up for the GQ interview knowing pretty much where it would go.


"Back Wooded Christian Conservatives" is not a pejorative in my book. But that's probably what the suits thought as well, which is foolish when your dealing with folks who have manifested an empire.

1. Duck Dynasty is scripted.

2. People get in trouble with their employers for shit they say publicly all the time. Doesn't matter if you tweet shit, post shit on FB, or - in this case - say shit in an interview.

This issue is less about Phil Robertson and A & E than it is about freedom of speech and Christians who believe homosexuality is a sin and the GLAAD community that wishes to dispel that notion. I think that is a very interesting and provocative debate and one I haven't decided on one way or the other.
