How weird is sleep

Like 1/3 of our life spent unconscious while we lay horizontally and have parts of our unconscious and conscious lives swirled around into narratives in our head that don't make logical sense but sort of do sometimes. And we just lay prone for 6-8hrs while the world keeps turning and people are awake going about the business of conscious awareness. Like what.

reprise85 12-15-2013 10:23 AM

And if you don't/can't sleep you fucking turn into a lunatic and eventually would die except in most cases your body will force you to sleep whether you like it or not

Bread Regal 12-15-2013 10:23 AM

If i weren't able to sleep, how could I get away with doing nothing.

reprise85 12-15-2013 10:23 AM

Is this alarming to anyone else

Bread Regal 12-15-2013 10:24 AM

not really.

i mean it is kind of strange, but if you think about the biological necessity for it, it becomes less weird.

Yeah, in a few weeks I'm going to be so busy I'll rarely have time to do nothing for any length of time (besides sleep), it's gonna be great and suck

ok strange is a better word

Bread Regal 12-15-2013 10:48 AM

the notion that weirds me out more is that your heart pretty much beats nonstop, from inside the womb all the way until you finally give up the ghost.

all the fuckin time. your heart does a lot of fuckin work.

Bread Regal 12-15-2013 10:49 AM

think of how fast your hand would cramp up if you had to pump your blood manually.

yo soy el mejor 12-15-2013 10:57 AM

my heart has been through a lot. it's so wild.

Bread Regal 12-15-2013 11:18 AM

mine too. i should take better care of it.

yeah that is crazy

for a long time, my anxiety was so high that i had heart palpitations basically 24/7. they finally put me on beta blockers and i freaked out because i couldn't feel my heart anymore. but the med was contraindicated for the asthma medicine i was taking and i ended up in the hospital because my doctor messed up by putting me on it. but now i'm calmer and i'm used to not feeling my heart beating all the time. i lived with feeling it almost constantly for like, 10 years. it used ot make my BP crazy as well - one time when I was in the mental hospital, my BP was constantly like 170/100. and it was all anxiety, it's normal now and i'm not on any heart meds. my heart rate is high though and always has been. normally 100+, maybe 85-90 when i wake up. poor heart. i have an app for my phone that checks your heart rate and it's always stupidly high

it is fucking weird that it's always going though.

null123 12-15-2013 09:02 PM

i have pretty bad anxiety and yet my heartrate and blood pressure are just short of being dangerously low so i assume i should keep my anxiety levels sufficiently high to prevent dropping dead

sleep is weird though i agree. it's kinda humbling to have to sleep

MusicMan4 12-15-2013 09:08 PM

i'm glad they've finally almost figured out the actual biological purpose for sleep
could never get it out of my head that they didn't really know
think i found that out from a science article on Cracked.com

MusicMan4 12-15-2013 09:14 PM

i havent had sleep paralysis in almost a year and i go to bed every night thinking i'm due

i still bite my tongue several times a week either right as i'm falling asleep or way in deep sleep so it hasn't been smooth sailing

That pretty much freaks me out too. I can't give too much thought to it or I'll have an anxiety attack about it. I used to have a lot of health anxiety in my early 20's, and thought my heart would stop at any time.

slunken 12-15-2013 10:18 PM

At it's most basic level, the concept of sleep always seemed like science-fiction to me.

T&T 12-15-2013 11:04 PM

sleep is definitely weird.
but not as weird as hibernation - imagine being asleep for over a month?

slunken 12-15-2013 11:05 PM

that's like a fantasy of mine i've tried it

T&T 12-15-2013 11:10 PM

I feel a lot of empathy for people who have deep meaningful experiences in their sleep & cannot return to those places or people ever again.

I once lost a girl that I dreamed, I'll never forget her. Her name was Lalanna. She never returned to any of my dreams, no matter how hard I'd try. I could consciously think of her but that's not the same as how real and separate from me she felt in those initial dreams. Lalanna.

Order 66 12-15-2013 11:13 PM

there's nothing i like better than getting home from work and passing out. and then freaking the fuck out when i wake up to my clock saying 8:00 and the relief i feel when i realize its only 8 PM

slunken 12-15-2013 11:15 PM

then you stay up until its time for work and start to crash around 7:30am

Order 66 12-15-2013 11:29 PM

pretty much

slunken 12-15-2013 11:33 PM

really though that instant where you switch from the absolute terror and fear of being late for work (or school or anything) to the sudden relief of that not being true is the highest of highs

That's... oddly sweet.

that day when you finally are getting over being really sick is awesome. having a little energy back when it feels like it was all sapped out of you for 4-5 days is refreshing.

i havent had it in a month or so... actually, maybe more. i used to have it multiple times a night, and then 3-4 times a week for a while. now it's just once in a while. that biting your tongue thing must be awful, i remember you talking bout it before

not even close to being comparable

slunken 12-16-2013 12:44 AM

what's the longest anyone has stayed awake. i'm definitely under 48 hours.

reprise85 12-16-2013 12:52 AM

about that. but i've had periods of a week or two where i had 2-3 hrs of sleep per night or so.

slunken 12-16-2013 01:13 AM

hey how weird is weird?

slunken 12-16-2013 01:16 AM

i once slept for 18 hrs straight. that's my record.

slunken 12-16-2013 01:16 AM

i'm constantly training.

reprise85 12-16-2013 01:25 AM

oh i've slept for about 30 hours straight before. maybe more. depression.

slunken 12-16-2013 01:26 AM

my favorite blanket

duovamp 12-16-2013 01:27 AM

>2013
>still have to sleep every night

Just something to think about. Tired of being tired all the time.

slunken 12-16-2013 01:30 AM

Sleep is why we don't have jetpacks. The two must never be combined.

T&T 12-16-2013 01:32 AM

LMGTFY, sounds like something that's Guinness World Record worthy.

found it:Randy Gardner, a 17-year-old high school student in San Diego, California, stayed awake for 264.4 hours

reprise85 12-16-2013 01:48 AM

i knew it was 11 days from the adventures of pete and pete

slunken 12-16-2013 01:51 AM

who was small pete's friend that always wore the football jersey and was overly cautious? i really liked that character.
