pavementtune 11-28-2013 12:47 AM

How many atheists/agnostics with a Jewish family background does this board even have? I'm aware of 4. Not enough to compare faces, is it?

Trotskilicious 11-28-2013 12:48 AM

NY Times – Poll shows major shift in identity of U.S. Jews

by the time my parents generation die out, there will be virtually no religious Jews in the United States.

Trotskilicious 11-28-2013 12:50 AM

i was actually thinking of how many athiest jews there are in comedy like john stewart and david cross

and you know what omega concern says, where there's one jew there's a LOT OF JEWS

so be sure to check for secret compartments and under floorboards

Trotskilicious 11-28-2013 12:53 AM

and in the goddamn attic, they cluster up there like cobwebs

redbreegull 11-28-2013 12:56 AM

the global Jewish population today has recovered to the point that it was at pre-Holocaust and is now stagnant. what significance is there in 15 million, Omega Concern?

there are still jewish neighborhoods where i live. there's a place in west boca i affectionately call jewtopia. orthodox peeps. well, there's a few like that, but one place in particular i'm thinking of. if you drive through there on a saturday you will get disapproving stares.

my mom was raised orthodox and my dad was reform, my sister and i are both atheists (i think she is anyway), and we were raised non-religious - we went to lots of bar and bat mitzvahs but that's pretty much it. we didn't have bat mitzvahs, and were not asked if we wanted them. my mom is actually a christian now, i think. pretty sure she's the only believer in my family. my aunt (her sister) is also athiest. i dont know if my dad even thinks about these types of things.

redbreegull 11-28-2013 01:28 AM

no dinners, my mom and dad are ultra reform. We lit some candles but only because I wanted to, we haven't really done it since I was a kid. I went to Israel last summer and have kind of become more interested in Judaism, but just from a historical/anthropological perspective. I doubt I will ever believe in God

pavementtune 11-28-2013 01:33 AM

Some candles? One tonight, second one tomorrow, you mean that?
Have you been in Tel Aviv, too?

reprise85 11-28-2013 01:33 AM

we did do the candle lighting when i was a kid, just when i was in elementary school though

a Chanukah menorah usually has 9 candles. on the first night, the shamash (the highest candle) is lit, and then it is used to light the candle on the extreme right to signify the first day. On the second night, the shamash is lit and then the two right most candles are lit to signify the second day, and so on.

Um. Someone tell askmoses that you don't call anything with 8 or 9 arms a menorah.
As far as I know the traditions in which order you lit - left to right, right to left - vary. I think in France they do it left to right, I know it only right to left. But let's not get into Judaism, poor Toc.

And I believe Berlin owns the ugliest ever - that thing is 10 m.

Trotskilicious 11-28-2013 02:26 AM

berlin has to make theirs the biggest and ugliest menorah to show how sorry they are

board game evenings... i don't think so. i mean we played board games sometimes i guess but my sister is a sore loser and always quit after i started kicking her ass so basically all the time

latkes, yes. potato pancakes are awesome, my mom is making them tomorrow. she basicaslly makes them any time she hosts dinner... which i guess is just thanksgiving these days. last year i went there on christmas and we ate ham and bacon. think we broke about 100 jewish laws that day. i probably had milk, too.

reprise85 11-28-2013 02:33 AM

also pretty sure we lit the menorah left to right but i dont remember also there are electric menorahs

reprise85 11-28-2013 02:52 AM

what do you call it then? it's a menorah. I'm not sure if I am too drunk to understand what you are saying or if you are being stupid

Wikipedia – Chanukah Menorah

redbreegull 11-28-2013 03:22 AM

are you referring to the belief some orthodox jews have that the chanukah menorah should be called a different name? if so, then fuck that shit

pavementtune 11-28-2013 03:23 AM

First askmoses and now Wiki, hm? That answered the drunk or stupid question. Chanukkia(h).

first of all, fuck you dickhead. it's well known that the orthodox harbor widespread prejudice against other Jews and you can go to nonexistant Jewish hell. secondly, wikipedia is extremely accurate. The vast majority of Jews in the world know the 9 armed chanukah candelabra as "the menorah" including most people in Israel. take your holier than though religious bullshit and get lost

pavementtune 11-28-2013 03:41 AM

Oh look, "happy chanukah I'm an atheist but hey I touristed Israel now I'm kinda curious" little boy rbg is drunk. It's not nice to call a woman dickhead. Maybe that's common amongst your not-showering pussy hair growing open relationship chicks.

Trotskilicious 11-28-2013 03:43 AM
