I'd be inclined to agree, but not this time.

This is the doing of the house GOP alone, specifically Boehner and Cruz. The only thing they're going to the negotiations with is "Defund Obamacare", which they know is shooting the moon.

Why? Because the PPACA was passed by a democratically elected congress, signed by a popularly elected president and survived a supreme court challenge. These knuckleheads don't realize that the only way to overturn this law is to win more elections. Even with the cards stacked in their favor with ridiculous gerrymandering, they can barely get a majority in the house this way.

Bear in mind that this is the same congress that passed the same budget we were operating under prior to the shutdown.

In short, Bohner and Cruz don't want to pay the bills on a budget that they passed so that they can go on this ideological pursuit to defund a new government program that, incidentally, gives the sick and poor greater access to health services.

I don't see how this has anything to do with Obama or Pelosi or Reid.

Order 66 10-03-2013 10:17 AM

both sides are clowns! they need to meet somewhere in the middle

redbreegull 10-03-2013 05:37 PM

Uh. The video just shows them saying "so what were saying is popular and what the dems are saying isn't. And while we don't want to be in this predicament, we want to win it"

Surely though there is a point to the fact that spending could have been appropriated individually rather than one giant bill that somehow everyone is going to agree on?

I agree of course that for tea-party republicans, this is purely an ideological, grandstanding move. And I certainly would blame them for putting the government in this position. At the same time, by holding out on the rest of government, Obama and the democrats are now just as complicit.

In other words, yes the GOP started it, but the Dems have now jumped right into the mud with them.

Order 66 10-03-2013 07:51 PM

there has never been a time in the country's history where a passed piece of legislation needed to be repealed in any way in order to fund the government.

how would you feel if in 2006 pelosi threatened to shutdown the government and go into default over bush tax cuts. yeah..

are you kidding? you think obama should just call it a day and let the ACA be defunded? you think that's a reasonable thing to ask of the democrats?

redbreegull 10-03-2013 08:26 PM

and the fact is that mcconnell and paul are fucking not living on planet earth. pretty much everyone except for the tea party 18% of the electorate blames the republicans

Republicans in Congress receive more of the blame for the shutdown: 44 percent of Americans blame them, while 35 percent put more blame on President Obama and the Democrats in Congress. These views are virtually the same as they were last week before the shutdown, when Americans were asked who they would blame if a shutdown occurred....

Most Americans want compromise. Majorities think the President and the Democrats in Congress (76 percent) and the Republicans in Congress (78 percent) should compromise in order to come to an agreement on the budget.

Trotskilicious 10-03-2013 09:20 PM

hey guys the minority party really HATES this thing you passed that they fought the whole time and lost on like 3 years ago, they can defund it by forcing situations by exploiting legislative rules to their advantage. sounds democratic right?

obama won re election because the republicans represent an increasingly smaller slice of the american public, they have disproportionate representation, and have gotten it deliberately by redrawing district maps. and then they won't even play ball with anyone to the point of making things sound like compromise means "cave completely to everything we want," they control vast swaths of the american infogrid, spreading deliberate misinformation and encouraging ignorance. i am not being dramatic, the party is ludicrous

Future Boy 10-03-2013 09:21 PM

the system works
