Saying "I want to have African American servers at my wedding just like an old plantation wedding." is just as offensive. Plenty of southerners wish they had won the civil war and it's fucking nauseating to hear about nostalgia for the plantation days. It's not about the feelings of individuals, it's about the systematic economic subjugation of a class of people and the fact that this is viewed as acceptable if not desirable by the collective shitstain known as the American south

yah. i never heard any context about how the word was used until now reading the wedding thing. not a good look. but it was still 30 years ago and presumably said in private, but the way she's apologizing you'd think she was involved in multiple lynchings. It all seems a bit off.

If you live in the south, you're familiar with how racists use "southern hospitality" to mask their contempt for non-whites, just well enough to keep them out of trouble. I guess it's similar to "Minnesota nice".

Yeah, the south is full of white people who were cognizant before the civil rights movement who still believe in the separate but equal thing, but they don't talk about it explicitly in the presence of someone who would give a shit. The most overtly shocking part of all this is not that she's a racist. The shocking part is that she's dumb enough to have fallen directly on her sword and admitted to it in a court of law, thereby absolving any doubt that she's racist. "Oh, my brother and I are being sued for alleged racial abuse? Well, let me tell you all about my racial abuse."

Exactly no I didn't use the word nigger, I wanted slaves at my wedding, but I only use the word nigger when they rob me or I'm making jokes about them.

I think the most disturbing thing is she's not really a hateful racist. I think she really is kind of shocked by this and just never realized the real impact of the culture she was raised in and how it's viewed by others.

It's also more then that though No one says it but everyone including the Food Network have been waiting for an excuse to hate this woman. It's the unhealthy food, writing a book where you tell kids it's okay to eat cheesecake for breakfast, the diabetes drug thing...

she's given interviews where she's spoken of her family's plantation history. They ownened dozens of slaves. but when she talks about it she refers to them as "workers." And she's spoken to the fact that her family "treated them like family."

That's a common attitude in the South. Everybody with slaveholder ancestors tends to think of their ancestors as "good" slave owners. As though there were a bunch of bad slave owners who ruined if for everybody else.

Exactly she has a romantic image in her head, in the south kids are raised with a disconnect. Yeah there were slaves but we treated our slaves like family. They also seem to think that because slaves stayed employed after the war implied everything was just peachy and that you can have a good old plantation style wedding that's about those happy after the war years. This is the issue that's at the heart of the arguments about Song of the South also.

For me this stuff never even hits my mind. I never even would have noticed that I was in a restaurant with all black servers, and if I did notice I would have thought it was strange, not "oh hey look this is a wonderful old plantation style restaurant."

I remember this happened once when a friend and I left a bar and there was a huge fight in the parking lot, for some reason these guys started walking towards our car as we were pulling out. My friends rolls down the window and screams at them "Fuck off spooks", I was shocked. First I had not even really noticed that the guys were black, second I had never seen anything like that from this friend, I was sitting there in shock thinking "wow spook, that's not just a racial slur you pull out in a panic, who the hell still says spook?"
