To convict Zimmerman of manslaughter, the jurors would have had to believe that he "intentionally committed an act or acts that caused the death of Trayvon Martin."

The state didn't do that - they were wrestling and the state couldn't prove he didn't feel threatened, thus firing a gun in self defense. Like you said, it's complicated due to Florida laws.

pavementtune 07-13-2013 11:37 PM

I wonder how complicated it would have been if it had happened the other way round. An armed Trayvon following Zimmerman and eventually killing him.

killtrocity 07-13-2013 11:51 PM

He could've gone up to treyvon and slapped him in the face then shot him in "self defense", we'll never know, and it's the word of a cop against the word of nobody. Case closed.

turn the tables, kill a cop in self defense, let's see how the self defense argument goes. fucking nauseating :)

fact is you have a 200 pound man and a scrawny 17 year old, use your fucking head. Remember that woman who was beaten in a bar in Chicago on videotape and the cop got off? Cops win, end of story

Inthis case, Trayvon would be dead by cop.

Fuck this shit! He's guilty. He may walk free, but he'll always be looking over his shoulder for the rest of his life and when he dies, he'll burn in hell.

During the post trial press conference Zimmerman's lawyers came across as complete assholes.

At one point Mark O'Mara stated that if Zimmerman had been black he wouldn't have been arrested for shooting Martin.

When asked what he thought was the high point of the trial O'Mara said the Not Guilty verdict, and then followed that up by saying that he thinks every time he spoke during the trial it was a high point. I think he made two or three similar comments to the fact that he is a great attorney.

The other asshole even said that he still thinks the ice cream cone tweet was funny.

MyOneAndOnly 07-14-2013 08:37 AM

Huge win for ALEC last night. They wrote the stand your ground law and pushed it through the Florida legislature.

(CBS) - Last Friday, Jacksonville mother Marissa Alexander was sentenced by a Florida judge to 20 years in prison for firing what she says was a "warning shot" into the wall after a physical altercation with her husband, Rico Gray.

The case has set off yet another controversy involving the state's "stand your ground" law, which is under intense scrutiny after the shooting death of Trayvon Martin in February. Critics, including Congresswoman Corrine Brown (D-Fla.), are crying foul.

How, they ask, could a 31-year-old woman in a relationship with a man who had a history of domestic violence, and whose actions did not result in any physical injury, be sentenced to two decades in prison while George Zimmerman, the man who shot and killed Martin, is out on bail?

"The Florida criminal justice system has sent two clear messages today," Rep. Brown said in a statement on May 11. "One is that if women who are victims of domestic violence try to protect themselves, the "Stand Your Ground Law" will not apply to them...The second message is that if you are black, the system will treat you differently."

thanks for the breaking news dipshit

Rider 07-14-2013 11:42 AM

It was shaky case to begin with. Add to that the totally inept way it was handled by everyone involved from the second it started really the only way it was going to end was not guilty. I mean my fucking god what the hell is wrong with our coroners office here. Once that guy hit the stand, trial over. It was like something out of a bad movie.

The prosecutors here keep running into trial unprepared. It happens over and over again not just with the stories that make national news.

Last year some kid wandered around my town with two AK-47s shooting at cops and houses. The prosecutors just gave up and dropped the majority of the charges because they heard the defense was going to have him plead insanity.

There is another case where they busted this "compound" full of terrorist skinheads. All those guys are going to walk because they had to bust them before they had enough evidence because the undercover cops cover was going to be blown.

It's just stupid mistake after stupid mistake here in Central Florida.

duovamp 07-14-2013 12:37 PM

You're from Florida too? That explains so much.

She had no legal right to be where she was (she was violating a stay away order from a DV case.) So SYG does not apply. You can think of it as being the same as committing a crime - SYG does not cover you in that situation.

The 20 year sentence is a consequence of FL's 10/20/Life law. There's a minimum mandatory day-for-day sentence of 20 years imposed on anyone who discharges a firearm in the commission of a felony. There are sometimes ways to go below that, but they require special findings, and that did not happen here. (This is very judge dependent, which is luck of the draw for the defendant.)

I'm not so sure this is an example of "a broken system" but rather an example of how 10/20/Life, lauded when it puts away muggers and robbers who use firearms, can be a two handed sword.

duovamp 07-14-2013 01:13 PM

It is a very big sword.

A Florida gun collector has pleaded not guilty to a murder charge alleging that he opened fire on a car full of unarmed teenagers, killing one, in an altercation that police say stemmed from loud music.

Michael David Dunn, 45, acted "as any responsible firearms owner would have," his lawyer said of the Friday evening incident at a gas station outside a convenience store in Jacksonville, Fla.

Dunn and his girlfriend were in Jacksonville for his son's wedding when they pulled up in their car next to the teens. Police allege that while the girlfriend was in the store, Dunn told Jordan Russell Davis, 17, and his three friends to turn down their music.

"It was loud," Jacksonville homicide Lt. Rob Schoonover said of the teens' music. "They admitted that. That's not a reason for someone to open fire."

After an exchange of words, Dunn began shooting with a handgun, Schoonover said.

"Nobody else in that vehicle was struck; it was just our victim [Davis], which was lucky because the vehicle was shot eight or nine times," Schoonover said.

Davis was in the back seat and was struck twice, reported The Orlando Sentinel.

I wonder if the new can now focus on some real important news stories now? Of course now, the real question is what the Nancy Grace nation will latch onto next to keep peoples minds off of the important issues.

The Zimmerman killing was over a year ago (2012). Dunn's is only now coming up for trial.

Earlier this month the case had been assigned a third judge, after the first two removed themselves.

What the fuck is up with Obama saying the DOJ should investigate this as a hate crime? That's some serious bullshit stuff.

Is it the OA just wants to assure those upset about the verdict that no stone was left unturned?

Starla 07-15-2013 01:29 AM

All you have to do is stay positive and everything will turn out fine.

Starla 07-15-2013 01:31 AM

Scotty, I'm sure that there is a hell. It doesn't matter what religion a person believes in, there's a hell somewhere for these damn hater thugs.
