I certainly hope nothing crazy happens.

...the Columbine kids relentlessly had the shit bullied out of them and lashed out

it seems this kid was influenced by his brother who was in turn motivated by a cultural/political agenda

not that anybody knows the motivations yet but that is my initial impression. Brother spends 6 months in Russia, comes back changed. Father is in denial about his sons, uncle seems aware and ashamed of their worldviews

Starla 04-19-2013 11:58 PM

I don't get into this over the top patriotism. It feels disingenuous when we live in a country that still struggles to accept diversity in race, religion, and gay marriage. This reminds me of the night Obama announced that Bin Laden had been killed, and I was grossed out by that as well. I'm glad they caught this kid, but overall this is all really sad and celebrating feels weird.

One of the biggest reasons I voted for Obama in 2008 was because he said he would close gitmo. And while Americans celebrate tonight, the prisoners there are trying to starve themselves to death because they want to end their never ending nightmare.

Yeah. London precautions are pretty heavy from what I gathered.
I never was scared of some insane shit going down at mass events, but I certainly wouldn't attend a Marathon this week. Props to the people who go.
Since Breivik/Oslo and the stuff that went on right after (groups forming online chatting about how fucking great he is, attempts to plot awful shit etc.) I feel rather uncomfortable thinking of copy cats.

if this happened in my city and they found the guy i'd be pretty damn elated... wouldn't be running outside shirtless waving an american flag or anything but i think you're undermining what they just went through. they have every reason to celebrate

pavementtune 04-20-2013 12:12 AM

They have. It's not the relief celebrating I don't get, it's the flag thing.

When you put it that way... :(

The celebration after Osama's killing felt more obviously like blood and soil nationalism and was indeed sort of weird. In this case, it seems more like community cohesion specifically within Boston... and the guy was captured, not assassinated.

but I am happy for the city that they caught the guy. I'm also hopeful that due process of law will be followed. Already there is talk about "suspending Miranda rights" which can apparently be done by the feds in cases of impending terrorist threats, but then anything he would give up under such conditions would be inadmissible in trial, which begs the question why bother bringing up suspension of Miranda rights in the first place? Most likely, CNN has nothing better to talk about.

Order 66 04-20-2013 12:17 AM

most importantly this will shut the tin foil hat guys up.. assuming the guy survives his injuries

Order 66 04-20-2013 12:18 AM

well it wont shut em up but hey more egg on their face wouldnt hurt

killtrocity 04-20-2013 12:20 AM

Nothing will shut them up. Ever. You can always say mind control was involved, it's the ultimate trump card. It's like drawing Helen Keller or Anne Frank in the popular party game Apples to Apples.

redbull 04-20-2013 12:24 AM

they have an anne frank card in apples to apples now? I thought the killer combo was spontaneous combustion + hellen keller

Starla 04-20-2013 12:28 AM

I think pave said it best. I admit, I don't have a lot of pride in this country, and I wasn't raised to. I grew up on a reservation where we mostly celebrated the service of our soldiers. Everything else patriotic felt like a lie.

I don't mean to come across as shitty about this. I know a lot of those people have been through hell.

underestimating you mean? I mean I get the general cheering and applauding of the cops. The USA chants do seem a bit off though. Maybe they just couldnt think of anything better to say.

they looked like a bunch of college kids that spent the entire house arrest time drinking

Order 66 04-20-2013 12:43 AM

people chant USA for anything. half the block was chanting USA when the 49ers were coming back after the blackout. i mean its a dumb tradition but its not like theyre saying 'we're accepting of our spotty past with natives and gays in lieu of this one triumph!'

Future Boy 04-20-2013 12:54 AM

pretty sure they were all just drunk, i was waiting for cars to start getting flipped

Order 66 04-20-2013 12:59 AM

ray lewis needs to get to boston and overturn cars stat

Eulogy 04-20-2013 01:01 AM

i'm not really sure what to think about what happened today.

only thing i know is that our news media is a fucking joke, and NBC maybe deserves a break for having both Pete Williams and Richard Engel, seemingly the only two people in the goddamn country who know the limitations of what they can report.

sppunk, your "torture the hell out of him" comment is so obviously fucking dumb that I'm not going to address it any further.

uhhmmmm. still find it odd that it took an entire fucking nation 16 hours to catch a 19-year-old, and that it only happened because he happened to bleed on some shit. we are not good at this yet.

feh, whatever.

TuralyonW3 04-20-2013 01:09 AM

I don't know why but I've just felt completely detached from this entire situation. I mean I've kept up with the most rudimentary details, but I just have no compulsion to follow the news about it

Future Boy 04-20-2013 01:09 AM

didnt pete williams say the boat was on fire

Obama: Pretty much the same as Assad.

I'm not saying that they are. I'm mostly speaking about why I can't identify with the patriotism and flag waving and I suppose I don't understand why some do with the way things are. I don't feel a sense of pride about chanting USA and holding a flag when I am ashamed and disagree with a lot of things our govt/leaders are doing. Anyway, they are creating a spotty future with the natives too, which is an entirely different thread.

I always thought Hitler was the trump card... But I've got some fucked up friends, so.

I was born there and I used to live there. My pride was unaffected by this situation. I did feel strangely sad the day of the bombing watching the video but I also felt pretty sad when you said your cat died so maybe I'm just a big pussy.
