who has hearing loss

what is it like?

I listen to a lot of loud music in the car, on headphones, and I've been to probably around a hundred concerts, hardly any of which I wore earplugs at. Going on around a decade of daily abuse to my ears. I've been fearful of hearing loss for a long time, but seeing as I'm a human being, I have been unable to alter this self-destructive behavior. I actually got my hearing tested when I was a senior in high school and I had perfect hearing back then, but that was now five years ago. So in the past two weeks or so, I have noticed a feeling like my ears are slightly clogged, or like I am on an airplane or something, but mostly in my left ear. I did see Dinosaur Jr. a few weeks ago and it's got me a little worried. Does hearing loss result in this sort of sensation of your ears being a bit stuffed?

redbreegull 11-15-2012 09:24 PM

like you know when you want to pop your ears from altitude change or whatever, so you kind of flex those muscles in your ear, and you get that crackly sensation a little bit as they pop and your hearing is restored? I get that a little when I flex those ear muscles but I still feel like they are stuffed up

redbreegull 11-15-2012 09:24 PM

this could all be psychosomatic

Dead Frequency 11-15-2012 09:56 PM

Same thing happened to me in 7th grade, but it was a tumor that had to be removed. I lost about 30-40% hearing

MyOneAndOnly 11-15-2012 10:14 PM

It's like you can't hear shit

redbreegull 11-15-2012 10:17 PM

what?

redbreegull 11-15-2012 10:19 PM

my mom used to tell me this joke when I was a little kid

A guy walks up to this other guy and says, "excuse me, you have carrots in your ears!"
"WHAT?"
"Excuse me sir, but you have carrots in your ears!"
"WHHAAAAAT?"
"YOU HAVE CARROTS IN YOUR EARS!!"
The man takes the carrots out of his ears and says, "I'm sorry, I can't hear you. I have carrots in my ears."

And I would laugh so hard I would fall over

MyOneAndOnly 11-15-2012 10:19 PM

I have 50% hearing loss in one ear and 40% in the other.

I also have Tinnitus.

i (probably) suffer from mild hearing loss from fucking around with digital studio software ... its easy to accidentally set the master volume at nuclear levels

i just can't hear people from far away or i have to ask people to repeat things from time to time. i hear its pretty common in the ipod era. (i probably should be more worried because my grandpa went near deaf in his fifties, dunno how the genetics of that works)

either way i wouldn't worry too much about it

MyOneAndOnly 11-15-2012 10:20 PM

Also, I'm old and I have a bad back.

yeah, one of the reasons I have always been a little worried about it is that I have to ask people to repeat themselves on a semi-regular basis. I haven't actually noticed a problem with my HEARING increasing since the whole stuffed up feeling, my ears just feel stuffed. And no tinnitus as far as I can tell.

scotty how did you fuck your ears up? loud noises?

Order 66 11-15-2012 10:29 PM

it could be allergies. alot of times gunk will go through to your ear canals

i don't think stuffiness is a factor in hearing loss. but i'm obvs not a medical doctor

MyOneAndOnly 11-15-2012 10:29 PM

Sinus and ear infections. I've ruptured both eardrums. Etc etc

MyOneAndOnly 11-15-2012 10:29 PM

But that doesn't affect my feet. I have high arches

MyOneAndOnly 11-15-2012 10:30 PM

I'm guessing that years of loud music didn't help either.

redbreegull 11-15-2012 10:35 PM

but that's the only way it sounds good :(

MyOneAndOnly 11-15-2012 10:40 PM

The last specialist I saw suggested hearing aids. I don't want to go there.

Mooney 11-15-2012 10:49 PM

i've been photographing loud shows for four years now, often with my head pressed against the stacks feeling the bass pound me in the side of the head. no ear plugs ever.

i find if there is any background noise, i often now have to ask people to repeat themselves multiple times to make out what they are saying. either i'm going deaf, or mumbling is a new trend.

reprise85 11-15-2012 11:03 PM

why dont you wear fucking earphones and spare yourself

reprise85 11-15-2012 11:04 PM

once in a while i step funny or do something with my hands and my limb feels weak and kinda like... like a leg falling asleep kinda feeling but somewhat different and it only lasts a few seconds and it hurts in a weird way and it's hard to explain. is this (very mild) neuropathy? usually it's in my right hand/arm. it feels like my arm is about to give out but the sensation stops before it does

haha your mom sounds like a real card

redbreegull 11-16-2012 12:34 AM

that joke is basically the epitome of my sense of humor and also probably why I can't interact with others in an appropriate way

reprise85 11-16-2012 12:40 AM

i can see that being funny to a kid

Reminds me of an old mtv animated short that had a guy holding two carrots and then cut to some text saying "carrots are good for your eyes" then cut back to dude who thinks about it for a sec and slams both of the carrots into his eyes and screams while running around with blood pouring out.

redbreegull 11-16-2012 12:53 AM

hahahaha

uh

ohnoitsbonnie 11-16-2012 01:44 AM

I hope you die

Eulogy 11-16-2012 01:48 AM

i'm slowly murdering myself with my lifestyle choices so i'm sure my hearing will go at some point. for some reason i need to listen to music through my klipsch s4's at full volume?

but w/e. live fast, die young.

that trail of dead show tonight probably didn't help either BUT GODDAMN IT WAS AWESOME.

Eulogy 11-16-2012 01:49 AM

redbreegull you should have been there

redbreegull 11-16-2012 02:18 AM

I know man. I know.

between the hearing loss and the liver damage I guess my life is fucked. oh well.
