holy shitballs

not gonna lie, I did not read this whole thread. I don't see why someone can't be Christian and not belong to any form of organized religion though. Anyone who can read the Bible and try to practice what Jesus says is as legitimately a Christian as any other person. I mean fuck, if you are Catholic, you don't even HAVE to read the Bible, you just do what you're told makes you Christian.

also it's dumb to go after people for thinking they belong to a religion while incorporating beliefs at odds with their holy text, or supplemental to it. No Christian alive today actually practices the way that the first Christians reading the Gospel of Mark did in the first century. If you read the New Testament without a lot of preconceived ideas about Christianity, you are likely to be pretty fucking confused as to what Catholicism or Protestantism has to do with Jesus

and This.

redbreegull 09-11-2012 03:17 PM

I mean, it's only organized Christianity that tells you that you aren't part of the club if you don't play by their rules. Seems like bullshit to me. If you gave the New Testament to some people living in total isolation, the interpretation they come up with would be totally different than any existing form of Christianity.

in what ways, exactly

paul was a huge asshole, remember

EyesOfAJackal 09-11-2012 04:11 PM

He brings up a good point. Christianity is very different in sub-Saharan Africa or in Orthodox Greece or in Chinese house churches or in Indian slums than it is in politically conservative Southern mega churches in the US (the ones that get all the media attention), where people tend to share a lot of cultural attributes that have nothing to do with Jesus. That's the way humans operate.

If you read the words of Jesus he talks about turning over the world order in terms of how people view one person as better than another- "the last will be first" etc. He invites prostitutes and tax collectors to the televangelists or Rick Santorums house of his day for dinner. He brought single woman along with his ministry and treated them as independent agents and listened to their words, which was incredibly radical in that time period where women were supposed to be married and in the home as property.

Even Paul, in his better moments trying to imitate those teachings, says "There is no Jew or Greek, slave or free person, man or woman in the church"

Eulogy 09-11-2012 04:13 PM

"Women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the law says. If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church."[1 Cor. 14:34–35]

Before the consolidation of Christianity into a few very large Churches, there were many, many Christian sects practicing extremely different forms of the religion, but everything that didn't fall into the myopic ideology of enshrining power institutionally was systematically eradicated

redbreegull 09-11-2012 04:22 PM

I mean I guess the New Testament itself is the result of this process, because there are a shitload of early Christian writings, gospels, and other teachings that were cut out of the canon, but they are just as based in Jesus' core teachings as anything accepted today.

I think you would be hard pressed to find a version of Christianity that actually doesn't contradict scripture in some ways as well

MyOneAndOnly 09-11-2012 04:39 PM
