Eulogy 08-30-2012 01:51 PM

Trotskilicious 08-30-2012 02:02 PM

Future Boy 08-30-2012 02:14 PM

i only got one since it was 50 bucks on black friday, and got the virgin mobile $35 a month plan. Its great, the cta bus/train app is incredibly useful.

hey, man. that sounds okay.

They're totally double-edged swords. I realize that it's eroding my social skills... but it really does come in handy when I'm in an unfamiliar town.

But, then again - would improved social skills (ie: being more comfortable with talking to strangers, being more adept at map reading, actually talking to locals for food suggestions instead of just Yelping it) make the trip a more rich experience in the first place?

Be warned: they're one of those things... once you get it, there's no going back to predated technology. It's like getting an iPod, then being told that you have to go back to carrying a CD wallet around with your Discman. Just isn't gonna happen.

yo soy el mejor 08-30-2012 02:18 PM

uhm, and no one makes fun of me. people just walk up to you and point and laugh if they see your phone? adult friends of yours actually jab you about it?

the other day i was walking and got turned around because a street stopped and then started again the next block up. i was going in the complete opposite direction. i asked one boy if he knew how to get to where i was going. he said no so i kept going. i ran into an older gentlemen who was said 'no, but we can look it up on my phone'. that's what's up.

Paying $45/mo (I'm on my friend's FnF program) for unlimited errrthing is too good to pass up.

no, they end up saying something they assume i can do like "let me give you the address" when i ask for directions and am not at home... or "you have to check this thing on facebook out" and stuff like that. they don't make fun of me, more like just dont understand how i can live without one

mxzombie 08-30-2012 02:24 PM

right now i have a phone that calls and texts (with some difficulty), but i use all of those features. i can track buses and trains via text. i don't need a smart phone--nobody calls me anyway. email can wait. i'm not on facebook or twitter or anything of the sort. i wouldn't use a smartphone enough to justify the expense. i can't get excited about it. they're soul sucking and it's frightening how readily and proudly people will admit to being addicted to their phones.

ohnoitsbonnie 08-30-2012 02:27 PM

Because there's a big difference between what you do on the internet on your phone vs your computer

that's not making fun. when i had a landline people would text it all the time and say 'didn't you get my text?' or say 'where are you?' like i could be anywhere other than home.

that's just them being stupid and making assumptions. i mean, that really shouldn't hurt your feelings or make you have second-thoughts. made me mad more than anything, especially when the same person would do it again.

i wouldn't necessarily call them friends or adults but yes, i know some really vapid hipsters.

ATX represent :nooooo:

Trotskilicious 08-30-2012 02:42 PM

"OMIGOD BRENDAN JOIN THE 21ST CENTURY ALREADY LOL"

"IS THAT A FLIP TOP HAHA WHAT ARE YOU POOR?"

i just tell them it's vintage

Trotskilicious 08-30-2012 02:45 PM

at&t keeps sending me offers for two free phones if i get their service, which would be on my monthly internet bill and i consider it but i watch people just sucked into those phones, and i especially hate how people will actually start fucking with it while i'm talking to them

"Oh, I'm sorry, what?"

it's just weird how some/many people are so consumed by them and considering i get sucked into a regular computer i can't even imagine how sucked into a smart phone i'd be

yo soy el mejor 08-30-2012 02:50 PM

that's on you for hanging with them. i mean, they know your name so you're willingly hanging out with these "vapid hipsters" that you know.

sounds similar to a friend.

Trotskilicious 08-30-2012 02:51 PM

are you serious with this shit?

yo soy el mejor 08-30-2012 02:54 PM

just trying to figure out why you (or anyone) would subject yourself to people who you say make fun of you, aren't your friends, and are what you call 'vapid hipsters.... ya know, if they aren't your friends.

yo soy el mejor 08-30-2012 02:55 PM

n-e-way.
smartphones are dumb.

opera de nuit 08-30-2012 02:59 PM

useful tools for some things, completely abused by the rude and socially awkward. the worst is the amount of screens i see at concerts. it's a sea of digital screens and it's super distracting.

Trotskilicious 08-30-2012 03:07 PM

YESS!!! i hadn't seen a show since about 2000 before i went to Pixies in 2010 and that was the biggest shock to see all the smart phones taking pictures and video.

Order 66 08-30-2012 03:08 PM

My best friend still has a flip but beside that i dont know anybody who hasnt crossed over. Nothing wrong with not having one but unless youre broke i dont see why anybody would hold off since theyre so cheap now and have plenty of practical uses.

I lurve my droid. Its like an appendage. Love browsing when im waiting in line or eating alone at a restaurant or something. Pull out keyboard is boss. Love putting on pandora at the gym and browsing between reps. I lurve it
