that would've been horrible if you were banned. what would we do without this type of information...

Haha that thought has actually crossed my mind before too...

But godamn it. It really would have been cool to see how much that album fetched... And if it was bought by a hardcore fan we might have been able to get a better rip of the album.

Not only is monte in charge now of the archive project which he pretends that there are 12 other people involved, but he's also frequently known to "interview" billy corgan and hang out with him after shows and etc.

to the best of my knowledge no, but i think monte can answer that

i was doubting the quality of the records.

They can be played on any normal phonograph but will be degraded by wear much more quickly than vinyl.
i have no idea how quick "much more quickly" is, and if it's only related to number of times played, or if they also degrade by just sitting on a shelf.
but there's a chance that it's no longer possible to get any quality out of these.

Shallowed 06-07-2012 06:15 AM

It does specify "degraded by wear", but then again it doesn't say that they degrade in storage.

GEN POP

Cool As Ice Cream 06-07-2012 08:15 AM

also, the machina II acetates are non-lacquered, according to spfc.org.
normally acetates are "a special lacquer-coated blank disc" where they "cut a sound-modulated groove into the surface", according to wikipedia.

so there's an extra difference between "normal" acetates and the ones used for machina II. lacquer-coated vs. non-lacquered.
this might also have an effect on the quality.

but i don't know. does anyone else know more about this?

up to 30 safe plays i think, if techno dubplates are any indication. but if you store them wrong they will warp much faster than normal lps.

non laquered are of inferior quality in general and even more limited playability. it's kinda obvious when you listen to the rips. normal acetates sound as good as pressed vinyl, just fora short period of time. mII already sounds worn on the early rips.

MyOneAndOnly 06-07-2012 08:46 AM

what would have been the reason for these being made that way? Was is simply an issue of cost? was it cheaper to make them (non-lacquered)?

New Art Rioter 06-07-2012 08:58 AM

The reason they sound worn isn't because they're on dubplates

Dubplates should sound AMAZING, the lack of sound quality comes from either bad mastering/a bad cut/issues before the tracks reached the cutting engineer

If a track is cut to a dub, then the sound quality won't degrade over time without being played - increased play will result in more snap, crackle and pop, but not in 30 plays, think more like 90 ish. The tracks won't sound muffled as M2 does, just more hiss n' crackle.

Also remember when the rips were made, I'm guessing they would have been on at least one of the first play throughs for most of the varients circulating, though this is speculation - they all sound quite similiar from my memory

Seeing some of the released tracks do sound better/clearer than the vinyl rips of M2 (Real Love springs to mind), I'd hazard a guess the sound issues are due to mastering issues, or issues with the cutting engineer. Agreed they do sound raw, but I remember at the time that seemed to add to the charm after people's feelings on the production of M1

emilem 06-07-2012 08:59 AM

it was an issue of being an ass and making a stupid statement. if it was an issue of cost he would dub 25 tapes at his home.

these are not dubplates, these ar hand cut lathes. dubplates are pressed, these are... well, hand cut.

dubplates are made from master plates, i mean. hand cut lathe are individually cut to disc in real time.

You're thinking of test pressings surely? In my experience dubplates are hand cut in the process you describe, never pressed

emilem 06-07-2012 09:13 AM

wait, yuou're right. anyway, here's some videos of the process.

But the seller wasn't doing anything illegal. You didn't even bother to check your sources before hassling her.

Then what did? The auction wouldn't have been interrupted if you had left it alone.

Monte views himself as the ultimate Billy fan. so much so that he feels the need to butt into other peoples' shit. People he doesn't know.

not unlike his daily race to post incomplete sentences and grammatical abortions on his blog, just so he can claim "first" in the race to document billy's every fart, cough and shit before Hipsters United or Grunge Report or whatever mentions it. Monte doing shit like this is his way of making himself important. HE knows what billy thinks! HE knows before everyone else. And that gives him license to act as arbiter of fandom.

Kahlo 06-07-2012 10:19 AM

Jesus Christ. We all thought you were Monte's right hand man. You know, the guy who posted on Crestfallen all the time, bigged up Byrne and defended BC in the face of reality?

When did you and Monte fall out? Did he not spoon you to sleep one night? did you feel rejected?

Tell Netphoria. Everyone care.
