I agree with the "go to Germany" post.
But yeah mercurial's suggestions are mine. You should get out of Amsterdam itself though, into the countryside. And get to Bruges. |
that's in belgium
|
Yes, but close and super easy to visit from Amsterdam. It's like you going to Dallas, but not having to deal with I35.
|
why would anyone want to go to dallas
|
I wouldn't say Bruges is close to Amsterdam.
"If I grew up on a farm, and was retarded, Bruges might impress me. But I didn't, so it doesn't." |
ahahahahaha

but there's no wide variety of dutch food anyway, we do have a wide variety of international restaurants. The world's first North-Korean restaurant outside of North-Korea actually just opened its doors in Osdorp, Amsterdam. A small crew of North Koreans were allowed to leave their country to set up and authentic restaurant outside their country borders. I'm still gonna go there some time. I've been living in Amsterdam for almost a year now and I really like it, it's just nice to walk around. I don't think the red light district is that uplifting as well, and it's always annoying packed with tourists. But I can understand why people would want to see it once. There's a fuckload of museums to visit. Visit the film museum 'Eye' that recently moved to a very cool postmodern building in the Noord area. I have to say the exposition there at the moment didn't really impress me but that's just the exposition of the moment. Visit the Hermitage in the center for old art which is where my gf works. Visit the Nemo museum of technology or the Stedelijk Museum for modern art. Don't visit the fucking sex museum. One thing I like about Amsterdam is that some areas are always intensely crowded but if you walk one block further it can be very nice and quiet all of the sudden. Visit the Jordaan district and get some beers in authentic or semi-authentic old pubs. If you want to see some typical charming landscapes, rent a bike and leave the city in the north. Go to a town called Broek in Waterland. It's picturesque like a motherfucker and very nice if you want to escape the city and large groups of people. Rent a bike anyway for everything you do. It's really the best and easiest way to go everywhere you want. Renting a car is not a good idea, prices for parking are amongst the highest in the world and you can't access the majority of roads in the center. |
first helpful answer about amsterdam in the thread!
any specific restaurant reccs? we're renting an apartment so we'll get some groceries and cook but we'll still end up eating out a few times. also need thrift store and consignment store reccs. |

In the realm of european vacations, my roommate is going to poland to meet some chick off the net. Hmm at least it's a cool location. They should be thrilled to meet, too.

Go to the Reguliersdwarsstraat. Its the gay street of Amsterdam and theres a lot of nice clubs and restaurants. The cocktails and salsa at Roses Cantine are to die for.
Go to the Edit festival in Haarlem on the 26th of may. Its a really nice house-festival at a lake with lots of areas with different music. They play mostly minimal and electro but also some techno. Take shrooms or xtc. |
