things to do in philly

hey y'all

heading to philly next month. looking for recommended things to do, places to see, restaurants to eat at, cool bars to chill at, the usual.

i'm also contemplating where to stay. what would be the best neighborhood for someone like me to stay in?

it's a thurs-sun trip.

thnx ;)

Get mugged
Get robbed
Get assaulted
Meet Banana

Not a lot of great options there, I'm afraid.

Dogfighter28 03-14-2012 09:03 PM

awkward

Trotskilicious 03-14-2012 09:20 PM

wait what

Eulogy 03-14-2012 09:22 PM

i mean those avatars couldn't be more different

Trotskilicious 03-14-2012 09:25 PM

i wouldn't link a place with a flash site either

it'd be a yelp review at most

Eulogy 03-14-2012 09:34 PM

why would a restaurant have an entire site that is blocked by a pop-up blocker

Trotskilicious 03-14-2012 09:37 PM

because they are idiots with a lot of money that don't understand the internet

and travis i'm not implying you're an idiot for liking this place, or that their food sucks. all i'm saying is their website sucks. any time i see something that says [LAUNCH WEBSITE] I kind of tsk tsk. Simplicity is key to marketing!

Eulogy 03-14-2012 09:40 PM

it's actually strange how many restaurants i've come across that have just awful websites

i mean how much does it cost to have someone build a nice one these days? especially a site that just needs pictures, menus, directions, and hours??

I DON'T GET IT.

Trotskilicious 03-14-2012 09:44 PM

whatever they spend, it costs more than it would if they just put a fucking menu on a page

Trotskilicious 03-14-2012 09:45 PM

seriously what would be wrong with that. the website, there's the menu, with the location and phone number on the top. no hyperlinks, no online orders, you know just simplicity.

pale_princess 03-14-2012 09:45 PM

dude sorry about the meeks/trots mixup i'm getting old and my eyes aren't what they used to be!!!!!

sppunk 03-14-2012 09:51 PM

Food:

- Roast Pork Italian broccoli rabe & sharp prov at DiNic's in the Reading Terminal Market (which by itself is an amazing place to wander around)
- At Reading, go Wednesday through Saturday though when the Amish are there
- Cheesesteak at Steve's Prince of Steaks or John's
- Khyber Pass Pub in Old City is a pretty interesting place with good food and a good beer selection
- If you're craving a burger, go to Standard Tap
- If you want something upscale: Vetri or Barbuzzo
- For Chinese, Han Dynasty (not in the actual Chinatown - it's really, really hit or miss)
- Dim Sum Garden for dumplins in Chinatown

To do:
- Don't get shot/raped/mugged
- Constitution Center is all sorts of awesome
- Center City has the Liberty Bell and all that other tourist bullshit you'll want to do
- Art Museum is good
- Wander around Old Town
- Go to Longwood Gardens
- Since you'll be there in April, see if the Phillies are in town and scalp tickets
- See what's playing at Trocedero, Union Transfer, etc\
- Chill around South Street
- Don't get robbed/murdered/raped

Stay in Rittenhouse Square / Center City

pale_princess 03-14-2012 09:56 PM

some actually helpful advice, preciate it, sppunk!
thanks very much for the restaurant rec's!
rittenhouse seems to be the neighborhood to stay in from stuff i've read, so that's good to know
i'm definitely going to a show at union transfer!

and i'll try my best not to get raped, murdered or mugged.

Travis Meeks 03-14-2012 09:57 PM

Oh shit, Reading Terminal Market is awesome. Check that place out but it gets VERY crowded on the weekends.

sppunk 03-14-2012 09:59 PM

Yeah, go early on a Wednesday or Thursday to the market. You can easily spend an entire afternoon there.

I know. I was in a hurry and noticed that weird flash website but figured pale would research the place further if she was interested. I agree that most restaurant websites are unnavigable.

Trotskilicious 03-14-2012 10:04 PM

i think it's because people who own restaruants usually don't know about anything but running a restaraunt. some of them are former cooks. so they get bamboozled by douchey salesmen from a web design studio that has more flash than talent. hah ! punz !

sppunk 03-14-2012 10:08 PM

Basically. Flash is retarded for a lot of applications. When I'm asked to do Flash I immediately balk.

Trotskilicious 03-14-2012 10:11 PM

i think there's an oatmeal cartoon that relates this from a guiltless web developer standpoint, that it's these restaurant owner know-nothings are the ones that demand this shit that fuck their site up because they don't understand the internet much

Trotskilicious 03-14-2012 10:12 PM

Lo,

Menupages solves this problem.

I Ate My Hamster 03-14-2012 10:30 PM

Fuck Philadelphia.

sppunk 03-14-2012 10:47 PM

I don't like it at all, but you have to admit it's a very unique city that's unmatched here.

duovamp 03-14-2012 10:55 PM

Kind of like how Banana is a very unique person who's unmatched here.

duovamp 03-14-2012 10:56 PM

Nah srsly there are some cool old timey things to see, but be really careful not to get off track and find yourself in the shitty crime-ridden cesspools.

Also be like Rocky and run up those steps.
